Still researching to determine what should be our 1st HGVC resale purchase.

Since we like to travel to different locations often, it was suggested we find one with the most flexibility in using our points to stay outside of HGVC properties. Can someone confirm/answer some of my questions regarding this?
  1. Interval International will probably have more higher end properties than RCI.
  2. How early can I reserve an II or RCI unit? have to wait until the 9 month window?
  3. I assume new properties get added as the calendar winds down. Best time to look?
  4. Is there a listing of which HGVC affiliates have the double access: RCI and II?
I think as we get older, we'll use our home location more, but could see staying different every year for a while.

As far I know, Interval International has more higher end properties than RCI.
- Four Seasons Residence Club
- Hyatt
- Marriott
- Vistana (aka Starwood)

II up to two years in advance.
RCI WEEKS up to two years in advance
RCI POINTS up to 10 months in advance

No you can book an exchange at anytime.

It’s best to setup an ongoing search request as early as possible. The best time to look sometimes depends on the resort.

Is there a listing of which HGVC affiliates have the double access: RCI and II?
I know the Florida affiliates do. See this old post.

Here’s a link to the Online Exchange Company Resort Directory

Another option is to buy HGVC and another separate timeshare system that is affiliated with Interval International. I started off with one system (HGVC) and added/subtracted timeshares through the years as my vacation goals changed.

For most timeshare systems you'll have
  1. Priority booking into your home resort during a specific booking window (compared to non-resort owners)
  2. Priority booking for resorts within your timeshare system during a specific booking window (compared to someone trying to exchange in)
  3. Lastly you'll have the ability to search for exchanges into other resorts however exchange availability can be limited (exchange deposits vary by resort).

Each system has their PROs and CONs. There's lots of great information on the various TUG Forums. Definitely take a look at the STICKY THREADS at the top of each forum.

In my case, I can travel anytime during the year. I prefer to travel when the majority of kids are in school (less travel demands = lower crowds + lower travel expenses (lower airfare, car rental rates, etc)). Over the years, I've become an opportunist by taking advantage of what is currently available or soon to be available (within my timeshare systems and/or through the exchange companies).
