My husband and I have spent a lovely week at the Grande Vista. For the first time since becoming a Marriott owner I agreed to attend a presentation. The woman who called me prior to our arrival was so sweet I let her talk me into it. I purchased a resale 2 bedroom at Harbour Lake in 2010 and never added or converted to points. I split and trade my week via II to Aruba every year with great success. In fact, I just returned from the Surf Club 10 days ago having traded my HL studio for a 2 bedroom less than 60 days out, hence no upgrade fee.

The saleswoman, within minutes of introducing herself and making small talk, asks me if I know of TUG. I said “yes, in fact, I am a member and faithfully read the Marriott forum”.

Anyway, she makes a limp attempt to talk me into buying 1950 points for $27,000 telling me that soon I will no longer be able to exchange into Aruba. I think I must have laughed out loud because next thing I know she’s getting up and signing us out. She was very nice and very sweet and I have $300 in my pocket.

Actually a smart salesperson. She learned that the probability that a tugger will buy/upgrade is extremely low, cut her loses by minimizing time spent so she can move onto the next one.

It was rather amusing and I was so happy to be “released” in less than 1 hour. But, as my husband and I were leaving, I saw people signing forms and wanted to shout “Nooooo, don’t do it!!!!”.

I'm surprised she asked, because what if you were not a TUG member? Wouldn't you think that at least half the people she asks would at least go to TUG afterwards, especially if they decided to buy? There is a lot more chance that person would then rescind, based on reading TUG forums.

I thought that too! If I ever go to a presentation and they ask me, I’ll say “no, what’s that group? Give me the website so I can check it out” and see what they say!

I don't think that it's a good idea to say to Marriott's salesmen that you can get a better value of your week using II because now Marriott's own II and if too many people doesn't buy DC points because they get incredible exchange on II like they can exchange a studio in Orlando for a 2 bdrm in Aruba where it's impossible using DC points (Orlando HL max points a owner of a studio can get is 1,625 pts without the skim factor and the minimum points to get Aruba SL 2 bdrm is 2,350 pts) then Marriott's could change the trading power formula on II to be inline with the value they put in the DC system and it will be impossible to get this kind of exchange in the future. So, we should use another excuse to not buy to not alert Marriott's that II is a problem for their sales of DC points.

Marriott is a huge corporation. They can access all of the data they need including how many exchanges to Marriott resorts from other owners. If they are going to decide to do that, it will not be because we said anything. It will be because they choose to in search of more profit. I think it’s going to be a matter of time before they limit the ability to rent points. That’s going to be how they will make more money.
