Findland and Norway Are Telling Airline Pilots to Be Ready to Fly Without GPS, and Some Think Russia Is Up to Something
By Christopher Woody/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

  • "Norway and Finland have both reported problems with GPS signals in their northern regions this month.
  • Both countries have been taking part in NATO's exercise Trident Juncture, which has irked Russia.
  • Reports of GPS interference related to Russian military activities have been reported in the past.
Disruptions to Global Positioning System signals have been reported in northern Norway and Finland this month, overlapping with the final days of NATO's exercise Trident Juncture, a massive military exercise that has drawn Russia's ire.

A press officer for Widerøe, a Norway-based airline operating in the Nordics, told The Barents Observer at the beginning of November that pilots reported the loss of GPS while flying into airports in the northern Norwegian region of Finnmark, near the Russian border, though the officer stressed that pilots had alternative systems and there were no safety risks.

Norway's aviation authority, AVINOR, issued a notice to airmen of irregular navigation signals in airspace over eastern Finnmark between October 30 and November 7, according to The Observer...."

Russia a suspect? Well, I never would have thought that!! ;) I guess with the US mid-term elections now over, their cyber experts were looking for something to do. Of course, Putin will swear to Trump it wasn't them and that will be the end of it!

It really makes perfect sense for Russia to develop ways to block/scramble/deflect GPS signals... They have found many ways to 'weaponize' electronic warfare. All the while, just smiling at the cameras and saying, 'Who, ME??? prove it and I'll deny, deny, deny.'

If we were/are developing anything similar, would you expect our leaders to simply admit it when asked by a foreign adversary?

I was in Havana recently on a tour. We passed the US Embassy and the tour guide mentioned it was empty. Then we went up hill to Revolution Plaza and the first building had dishes and antennas on top. I said, Oh thats where you beamed down the brainwaves to our embassy. He wasn’t amused.

It was a strange vibe from the people there, they know their system is not working but are very hesitant to speak against it. If you go, take your own TP.

Findland Summons Russian Ambasador Over Jammed GPS During NATO Drills
By Sallyann Nicholls/ Findland/ EuroNews/ euronews.com

"Helsinki have summoned Russia’s ambassador to Finland, Pavel Kuznetsov, to sit down with State Secretary Matti Anttonen on Monday after accusing Moscow of interfering with their global positioning system (GPS) signal during NATO exercises.

The finnish foreign ministry said Thursday that the source of a large-scale GPS interruption last week in the north of the country came from Russian territory.

"We don't have anything to hide here. Disruption is a serious matter which disturbs civil aviation. We will act towards Russia, we will discuss this and we expect answers," Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini said in a statement to public broadcaster Yle.

Moscow have denied involvement.

Norway also reported a loss of its GPS signal in its own airspace when the NATO drills began in October.

Dubbed the ‘biggest exercise since the end of the Cold War’, more than 40,000 troops from over 30 NATO countries have been participating in the Trident Juncture war games, stretching from the Baltic Sea to Iceland....."

Norway has 'Electronic Proof' that Russia Jammed GPS Signals Between NATO Troops During Huge War Games
By Reuters and Sara Malm for MailOnline/ News/ DailyMail.com/ dailymail.co.uk

  • "Norway claims it has proof that Russia jammed GPS signals during war games
  • Norway's Defence Minister says it has demanded an explanation from Moscow
  • Trident Juncture drills were NATO's largest military exercise since Cold War
  • Held between October 25 and November 7, they involved some 50,000 troops

Norway claims it has electronic proof that Russian forces disrupted GPS signals before and during the large-scale NATO war games held in Scandinavia in November last year.

Both Finland and Norway accused Russia of intentionally disrupting GPS signals, which also affected the navigation of civilian air traffic in the Arctic, but Moscow dismissed the allegations.

Norway's Defence Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen has today said that they have handed over proof to Moscow, and have been told that it will be 'reviewed'....."
