We'll be in Rhode Island the first week in October and want to spend a second week to see Fall "colors". Royal Caribbean has a 7 day NewEngland/Canada cruise out of Boston both the week before & after we're in RI. We could do the cruise or plan a 7 day road trip. Any suggestions?

I would do the road trip. I love cruises, but they are cruises, wheras a rode trip would allow you to make nice stops on the way at quaint restaurants, parks and places that you could see and experience the fall folliage better. I usually do the cruises when I want to hit lots of locations with the kids that would cost me too much in airfare to do.

Yes, we're staying in Newport & will spend four days in Boston either at the beginning or end of the trip. Thanks for the info. Road trip wins!

another for the road trip. One thing, if you think you'll be doing any overnights on the road trip away from Newport or Boston, make sure to book your rooms way ahead of time.

Of course that means you'll need to map out your driving tour first, but rooms are very hard to come by the closer you get to Oct. Try with chains that will let you cancell the day of arrival.

Road Trip! but that doesn't mean you cant get some time on the water! there are a lot of areas along the New England Coast where you can do Day cruises on all sorts of crafts, there are island ferries run by the states etc.
If you enjoy the casino thing, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are in a very beautiful rural area in CT and not far from RI. you really cant go wrong no matter where you head in New England the first weeks of Oct. the Foliage should be great. Ditto on what Moosie said... book your rooms early, lots of leaf peepers, and the Columbus day weekend. don't ooverlook local Inns and B&B's lot's of very interesting options! RT
