We are thinking of driving to El Rosario next winter from Puerto Vallarta. The new freeway is open and I have read that travel time to Guadalajara is not to bad. It looks like about 9 hours by car on the map. I have made reservations to spend the night near the Butterfly Preserve and thought that on the way over and back to PV we could stop in Guadalajara or maybe the Lake Chapala area.

Anyone been to the Butterfly Preserve ?

Hi Bill,

I can’t help you with advice on the driving time to the monarch preserve, but the below link gives a little information about the preserve:
http://www.buckettripper.com/the-monarchs-of-mexicos-el-rosario-biosphere-preserve/

We have a lot of milkweed on our property (the host plant for the monarch). We’ve been finding the Monarch caterpillar crystallus’ in strange places... on the side of the garage, the underside of a hydrangea leaf, wooden fence, etc

Thanks Carol.

The plan is evolving to include Ajijic. Ajijic is an area that interests me for snowbirding. The place I booked for El Rosario is about three miles from the sanctuary. So we will drive to Ajijic , then to El Rosaio , back to Ajijic and then back to Nuevo Vallarta. I want to get to the butterfly preserve around noonish on day 2 and then again the next morning if we like it.

Here’s an article about the Monarch butterflies in Mexico and where to find them.

@easyrider / Bill, are you in Mexico yet?

Not yet. I did make a change to this trip regarding hotels. I think we will drive from Nuevo Vallarta to Ajijic to Zitacuaro . Ajijic is about the half way point. From what I read it looks like there is a decent road for most of the trip. If the weather looks good we plan on heading to El Rosario. If not we might go to Ajijic anyway as there are a bunch of expats we know living there. The overnight in Zitacuaro might turn into Morellia by the time I dial this in.
