Does anyone else have a gripe with paying Transient Taxes to stay at your own timeshare(s)?

If you book your own timeshare for a 30 day or less stay, many cities are charging transient taxes as if timeshare owners don't own their properties & aren't already paying property taxes which are apportioned to all TS owners as part of their maintenance fees. Supposedly, if you book a 31 day or more stay, then the transient tax is not charged, because 31 day or longer stays are not transient stays. I consider the transient tax to timeshare owners as double taxation. Timeshare owners are not staying in hotels or motels, they are using their own 2nd or 3rd properties. Has this issue ever been challenged in court by any organizations or individuals? Just curious!

Sorry to be the spelling police, but I can't help it. That would be "gripe" not "gribe".

There was a long discussion about this regarding the TAT in Hawaii. We own in Hawaii. We pay the TAT when we stay at our timeshare. I don't really think much about it, it's just another cost of vacationing there.

Ironically, we own at HGVC W57 in NYC (ground zero for transient fees) and there are no transient fees assessed for TS owners.

I remember reading that Hawaii was adding a timeshare occupancy tax, on top of property taxes timeshare owners are already paying, blatantly taking advantage of people who live elsewhere & can't retaliate at the ballot box.

If that sort of thing catches on widely, it could be the final straw that drives us out of timeshares & timeshare vacationing. (We already quit vacationing in Las Vegas because garage self-parking at several of the big casino-hotels is no longer free.)

That transient tax was added quite a few years ago. If you've visited Hawaii, you've been paying it. It's basically a few dollars a day.

We own three weeks on Maui, and when the property taxes increased, our resort stopped charging the TAT to us. So we don't pay a TAT on Maui as owners.

    Nice.

Our fees haven't gone up for awhile (property taxes are included in the maintenance fees) so we're still paying the TAT. But as I said, it's a couple of dollars per day.

I know if you stay at Wyndham or Worldmark Indio you have to pay that tax. Also that it is based on the size of the unit. I'm not sure if that is just a Palm Springs, CA thing or is all of California.

We stay regularly at Westin/Marriott brand timeshare at Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert but we have not had to pay transient tax when we check in. I did not look at our MF bills to see if there is a line for it.
