Over in the Travel Info forum, DebBrown mentioned that going to the Chicago DMV wasn't a solution for her son's license problem. :p

I bet lots of us have crazy DMV stories.

When I lived in Chicago, I was using my (unexpired) Missouri license. We trudged down to the Chicago DMV one evening to see what could be done after my wallet was stolen.

I had my picture ID from the University of Chicago where I worked. I decided I would keep track of what we went through.

I did get an Illinois license that evening -- all it took was standing in 13 different lines.

In Nevada you only need to go to one line, even if you are registering a car *and* getting a driver's license. No, wait, that's not exactly right...you have to get a VIN check outside, but there's never a line for that. And then you go into the "triage" line to get a number. If you are handicapped, you get a "short number" otherwise its a wait of hours and hours sometimes.

BUT, there's a trick to all of this. DMV closes their doors at 5PM. Long as you are *inside* by 4:59PM, they will stay and help you. So if you plan to arrive no later than about 4:50PM, you'll be out by 6PM or so. I've seen this happen many times, people walking in just before closing, and when I pass by again shortly after 6PM virtually everyone is gone.

There are only four DMV offices (and a special "truckers DMV") in the Vegas Valley, so as you can guess, you have to have a strategy. We went to North Las Vegas 45 minutes before opening, and were done with two regs and two licenses by 37 minutes after opening.

You can go online and get a list of things you need before you go to DMV. It really helps cause the list is long and if you don't have it all you are wasting your time.
