Bass Pro Shops and Cabala's use to be 2 separate Chains with similar merchandise and customers. Bass Pro Shops was primarily East of the Mississippi and Cabala's was primarily West of the Mississippi. Bass Pro Shops bought Cabala's and Cabala's has been going down hill. They did away with the Bargain Barn. They did away with the Employee Discount. Just recently received my Flyer for Black Friday. They did away with the Black Friday Giveaways. I admit they are giving away Surprise Gifts for 2 days on Saturday and Sunday to the first 300 in line each day. When you look at the List of possible Surprise Gifts (most people get $10 Gift Cards and this was true under Cabala's) the value of the Surpise Gifts has really been reduced. Nothing worth getting in line 3 or 4 hours before opening.

People make a life out of Black Friday deals. Maybe Cabela's figures they can't compete? As to the decline, they also probably can't fight with online stores, and competition from other sporting goods retailers. Where I live, there are numerous brick-and-mortar choices for sporting goods, surrounding the area the one Cabela's store is in. That one is a half hour drive from my house, and there are closer options. To be honest, I think in the ~10 years that store has been there, I've been in it maybe once.

I think what draws people in is that Cabelas is like an attraction. I've been to a few Bass Pro Shops, which are large also, but more on sales than exhibits. So, I won't say they're going downhill, they're just going at it slowly this year.

Once upon a time, I'd stop at Cabela's 'Home Store' in Sidney NE, and I found their clothes to be of superior quality and suited to my likes. With their explosive growth, either my tastes changed or they seemed less of an occasion to visit. They even built a good size store in my home town- and even that didn't entice me. My feelings about Bass Pro Shops are kind of like my feelings toward NASCAR and FOX and Pro Wrestling. Maybe OK for some folks, but not me. I'm feeling that Cabela's is going down that road.

I didn't leave Cabela's, Cabela's left me.

The Cabela's in Hamburg,PA became a destination resort. I've never before seen a retail store built along a highway in the middle of nowhere, and all kinds of restaurants and motels pop up.

Boy, I've gotta get my eyes checked. When I first saw this thread, my brain asked "Why is Denise at Cabela's and what happened?" :)

I suspect that in the retail wars, Cabela's & Bass Pro Shops are walking wounded.
The days of brick+mortar are done. Soon everything will be an online store...
Either Amazon, Walmart & Home Depot.

My husband was very upset when Gander Mountain closed it's store in our area.

Dick and Mary Cabla started their business is 1961. When the company went public, the family, retained 25% of the ownership. However, Dick Cabela died in 2014 at age 77. A few years ago, I actually met Mrs. Cabala (Mary) when she was in Reno, visiting her Reno store. She was playing video poker at the lobby bar at the Peppermill Casino. She was probably around the same age as her husband, and I'm guessing that she got a great offer, and it just got to be too much for her.

Cabelas has guns, ammo , archery equipment and about everything a person might need for hunting or fishing. I was buying bulk ammo from Cabelas but about 10 years ago it became way easier to buy bulk ammo and guns online. Now days I only buy some fishing equipment now and then along with my permits, licenses and tags.

If Cabelas turns into a Bass Pro Shop it wouldn't bother me one bit.

They started building smaller Cabela's stores. We had one just open up around the corner from use beside the Costco. It isn't the destination attraction that we stopped at on a road trip one time when passing through West Virginia. It is a rather vanilla store, much like the local Gander Mountain that recently closed up shop. My FIL shops at Bass Pro Shop all the time but doesn't bother with the local Cabela's since there really isn't much to it where Bass Pro Shop has everything he would ever need or want. The Bass Pro Shop is more of a destination where the local Cabela's is just another big box.
