Hopefully, this will close the book on a clearly evil person...

(CNN) -
Charles Manson, the wild-eyed 1960s cult leader whose followers committed heinous murders that terrorized Los Angeles and shocked the nation, died Sunday of natural causes, according to the California Department of Corrections. He was 83.

The diminutive and charismatic Manson orchestrated a wave of violence in August 1969 that took the lives of seven people, spawned headlines worldwide and landed him and his "Manson Family" of followers in prison for most of the remainder of their lives. The brutal killings began on August 9, 1969, at the home of actress Sharon Tate and her husband, movie director Roman Polanski. He was out of the country at the time. Over the course of two nights, the killers took the lives of seven people...

Good riddance is all I have to say. He lived way too long.

I was in high school when those murders happened. About six months later, a new manager at a restaurant I worked in shared lurid stories of the horrific scene that police discovered when investigating the murders. His brother was a Los Angeles police officer. I'm still bothered by the visuals of what he described.

Manson maintained to the end that he never told anyone to kill anybody, but it was obvious he encouraged his followers to do their ugly worst. Tragic on all counts, and completely preventable.

If you're at all interested, google the connection between Charles Manson and The Beach Boys. (Yes, those Beach Boys.) It's a tale that will raise goosebumps. The things the Manson Family did could have had a very different outcome.

Do I applaud the fact that Manson is finally dead? No. I'm saddened that those tragic events went down the way they did, and so many lived were needlessly lost. What I am is relieved to know the worthless piece of human garbage will never be able to hurt anyone else.

Wasted lots of taxpayers' money to prolong his life.

Actually, studies show that the cost of death-penalty cases far exceeds the cost of life-sentences. On the average, death-sentence cases cost $520 thousand more than life-sentence cases, and housing a death-row prisoner costs $90,000 more per year than prisoners in general population. Source: DeathPenaltyInfo.org

It could be said that Manson should have been executed, regardless of expense.
But for now, let's just say, "Good riddance."

... not if the execution is carried out within a couple of months of sentencing. Just saying...

Manson was sentenced to death. But withing something like a year after he was sentenced California ended the death penalty. They did reinstate it later on, but for some reason at that time Manson's sentence was changed to life, without parole.
