Changing ownership of Type of Unit

We own an affiliate (The Bay Club in Waikoloa HI) but are not HGVC members. We usually use our time each year, but have recently been renting it out. The reason we have not been using our own unit is because my husband likes the Villa layout better than our 2 bedroom unit.

So my question is if anyone knows if it's possible (and at a somewhat reasonable cost) to trade in our current unit and upgrade to another type of unit?

I might be interested it doing something like this if Hilton would purchase our current unit at their retail price, if we in turn purchase a Villa at their retail price. Obviously I can (and plan to) call Hilton, but was just curious about any experience anyone might have.

    Thanks in advance,

I'm doubt HGVC would do this for Bay Club, since it's theoretically an independent affiliate, but they have made that offer to owners at "true" HGVC resorts where membership is mandatory. The local managers or resale office may be able to help you. Selling what you own privately and buying a new TS resale is prolly more economical.

Since Bay Club is an affiliate I would ask the management there. If the HOA owns a week you want then I think you might have a chance.

When I was there in May the two privately owned villa units were for sale (building 6), you could own one. We toured them both during the open house, spoke at length with one owner. The other one is managed as a rental. The owner told us there is only one other unit privately owned, a 1 bedroom penthouse in building 1.

I doubt if the HOA or HGVC owns any, you are going to have to find one resale then sell yours.

I agree with this advice on owning a different timeshare than you own. If HGVC did let you trade in your unit they would give you either what you paid for it from them, or if you bought it resale the price that the original owner paid when they bought it from them. It seems like they have price increases about every few months so their current retail price has to be greater, and perhaps much greater than what they would give you in trade.

I always got a kick out of HGVC raising its prices of their timeshares while real estate in Florida and Las Vegas lost about 1/2 its value. Timeshare pricing must be derived by the marketing people getting into the heads of people on vacation that go to a presentation and their desire to stay on vacation forever to drive them to buy. Now that we are retired I know the feeling of wanting to stay on vacation forever. This year we are doing 146 nights.
