Reports say that's the Cape Sands Inn in West Yarmouth and that Barnstable, Yarmouth, Dennis and Harwich were all affected by high winds. Still 50,000+ without power.

A friend of mine is down in West Dennis for a couple weeks, she says she rode it out in the bathtub but it was scary!

My friend just posted on Facebook, she had invited another friend for a golf outing. She had just filled her plate off the buffet and ran to the shelter carrying it.

You would think Cape Cod would be safe from tornados especially this time of year. Just shows no where is absolutely safe. You need to go where you want and enjoy.

Do they even have a warning system on Cape Cod? Our area would not. In fact we have tsunami signs in the closest to the water areas, but no sirens. AFAIK they only use the Amber alert system on our phones for child abductions -- we've never heard any tests of the "Emergency Broadcast System" other than on the TV or radio. In this day and age you'd think the phones would give alerts; I bet they do in high tornado areas. Anyone live in an area that gives phone alerts for weather (and would you have had to load an app first?)

I have an iphone and use the weather channel app. I get tornado alerts, not sure if it is coming from weather channel or as an emergency network for my area.

We have something called Code Red Alerts in our area that are used to warn of weather related dangers. I think I recall these warnings follow us as we travel in that I believe I have received Code Red warnings for the areas we are in at any given time - assuming, of course, that area uses Code Red. (I'm trying to say we do not only receive these about the area around our home.)

I got an alert on my phone just about a half hour ago for a flash flood alert. It seems that anytime rain is forecast in the Las Vegas vicinity, flash flood alerts are sent. I don't think I have an app on my phone--I think the alerts just go out to all cellphones that have been enabled to receive them. I think my phone went off about the same time the alert came across the tv screen.

How to enable Emergency Alerts on iPhone
  1. Open up the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Notification Center.
  3. Scroll all the way down to the bottom.
  4. Tap on the toggle switch next to Emergency Alerts.

I should have mentioned you do have to sign up for Code Red Alerts.

We're in southeast MA, about 30 miles from the Cape Cod Canal. We get weather alerts similar to Amber Alerts on our cell phones and scrolling bulletins with klaxons on cable and streaming TV here, and I don't think we ever signed up for them specifically. The Cape probably gets the same broadcasts.

Wow, video of the roof being blown off!

FWIW: that looked a lot like straight line winds and not a tornado. However the damage is caused, it's still damage though.

An emergency alert came over the phone (Verizon) once the Tornado warning by NWS went up. Didn’t sign up for anything special.

My alert was on, that is why I get them.

Okay - this made me laugh but it will take a quick explanation....

For some reason, I recall Klaxons because of my students blasting this mess at an exceeding uncomfortable audio level one day....
I know I never signed up for them.......

Maybe you had to be there.....
