I'm considering making an exchange into a resort that I found during a bulk deposit. 1 BR trade into 3 BR Marriott. However, my plans are not 100% as there are some uncertainties with work related travel. I know you can trade 3 times with e-plus but searching online often is not possible for me. I need OGS. So I was wondering if I can cancel the trade 60 days out and get a replacement week. Yes, I will lose the exchange fee but losing $159 is an acceptable cost for me to hold this week. My questions are:
  • Do you get a refund of the upsize fees?
  • Is the trade power of replacement week same as the week I had deposited if cancelled > 60 days before check-in?
  • What would be the validity of the replacement week? The original week is valid almost 2 years beyond the exchange date.
  • Is there any reason to buy e-plus in this scenario? It seems it would be a waste of money since I don't want to do online searches. $59 vs. $159 for new exchange with OGS.

Thanks.

You do not get a refund of the upsize fee if you cancel. If you upsize again from your original size with cancellation you pay again. With eplus you do not.

You will lose 60 days on the life of the deposit because you will have one year from when you cancelled vs one year from your check in date (with eplus).

I don't know if you lose any trading power or if it becomes more like the trading power your original deposit would have had if it were deposited 60 days prior to check in vs the several months you probably used.

Another thing and I don't know if this has changed or not but you mentioned $159 exchange fee. I am assuming Marriott to Marriott (non enrolled). Several years ago when I had to cancel an exchange, I got a replacement week and it still had priority but I lost the internal discount and had to pay the regular exchange rate even when staying internally. I reached out to II and the confirmed that yes the full regular exchange rate would apply but the priority remained. I always questioned that and wondered it they gave me a non marriott replacement week. No way to prove it either way.

So if that is the case it may be another $40 your need to pay if you cancel and rebook.

Thanks for this info. It does not look like a feasible option. I won't make that trade.
