Buying into HGVC via Affiliate Resale

I am interested in buying into the HGVC program and have located a week for sale at the Elara in Las Vegas that I am interested in. During my discussions with the realtor, I came to realize that the week is actually deeded via Westgate and not HGVC.

After hearing this, I ended the discussion and moved on. However, as I was rereading the HGVC program intro again on this site, I noticed that it states you can convert an affiliate ownership to HGVC if you pay $399.

Does it make sense to purchase an affiliate week and convert it if the price is right? Would I be giving anything up by doing so? It is a platinum week in a 1BR Grand room, which looks like it should be worth 7,000 points in the HGVC system, does this map over directly as such?

Elara has a unique set up, so I am not sure if this would work. I believe your unit would belong to the Westgate network. Please report back if it does work.

While the units that HGVC owns at the Elara are HGVC units which have associated points, I don't believe that the Westgate units have any affiliation or value in the HGVC system. Westgate doesn't even exchange thru RCI their properties are in the II exchange system. If you want into the HGVC system shop somewhere else.

While Westgate Elara units are not affiliates (no way to participate in HGVC)...
There are plenty of others, such as: Bay Club in Hawaii, Plantation Beach Club
at Indian River Plantation, and the SW Florida legacy resorts - Sanibel, Captiva,
Marco Island, Ft.Meyers Beach.

Buying an affiliate unit with the aim of joining HGVC can be a good deal.
You avoid some buy-in fees, pay only the voluntary activation fee, and...
resale prices can be very attractive. I bought one here on Bargain Sales.

I own three different affiliates, Craigendarroch Lodges, Bay Club at Waikoloa and Grand Pacific MarBrisa and did not pay more each of than .50 a point for any of them. There is absolutely no difference with regard to how they work within HGVC as HGVC is one of the few systems that treats their resale owner fairly and without restrictions (only thing not available is elite status). With them point are points, plain and simple.

Agreed. I own 2 bay club units that get me 9600 every two years. I paid about $500 for BOTH. So look for one of those. The MF is a bit high but the buy in was so low, it will take many years before the MF bites me vs the cheap purchase price.

I own affiliates and actually prefer it more as it gives me more options, such as being able to trade in II. In the future if hgvc changes their rules and I am not happy, I am not stuck in the system as I am a voluntary member.

One other way to look at owning an affiliate, they will be kept up to HGVC standards, whether you join HGVC or not. So if your goal is to use timeshares as a surrogate second home, you don't have to pay all the extra fees. . .
