Very sad. This is not an infrequent event on the Island. If you are coming to HHI it is my understanding under state law cars, not bicyclists, have the right of way. Be very, very careful at intersections and when attempting to cross 278.

Having ridden in South Carolina, I just want to mention that as in most states, bicyclists are generally expected to follow the rules of the road, and would have the right of way when a car in the same situation would have the right of way, or would need to yield when a car would similarly need to yield. By SC law, cars are required to maintain a safe distance from cyclists. As a cyclist, though, I am very aware that who is supposed to have the right of way when one operator is controlling a two-ton vehicle and the other operator is fully exposed but for a helmet, lycra, and shoes isn't always pertinent. I know who wins every time in car vs. bicycle/pedestrian.

That said, this doesn't really sound like a bicycle accident but a tragic pedestrian accident in which she happened to be walking a bicycle. Be careful out there!

Down by Disney there is an under-road pathway.. I always cross there. Maybe better signage would help.

HHI has to be one of the most bike friendly vacation spots around with all of the bike paths across the island. This is a reminder to all that even with bike paths there are points in which you must cross over a roadway and be very careful. I have seen bikers ignore stop signs in sea pines when crossing over roadways and drivers that are overly aggressive. Prayers go out to all involved.

My prayers are with the families involved. Please be careful when you are leisurely walking, jogging and when you are riding your bike. Periodically, please check Your surroundings.
