It read the article and was hopeful that someone was making the change that I want, but no. :)

Both Google maps & Waze took us on what we liked to call the "cornfield option" while in Normandy. It took us a few days to learn to ignore the directions and try to follow the signs on the road instead, using the map directions to help us if we missed a turn. Otherwise we inevitably found ourselves on a one lane road in the middle of a cornfield, lol. True, we always got where we were going, but it wasn't comfortable because sometimes there are ditches on both sides and a large tractor coming towards us. When using the Paris metro site, they had a route planning option called "simple" (I think) which could take longer but had the fewest number of train changes. I think that a "simple" option for maps would be a big help when you are in an unfamiliar area. Staying on the main roads and having to make fewer turns as a tourist would have been a bigger help than routing us on a one lane road in the middle of nowhere. We had the same issue in Ireland. Once Google maps sent us on a one lane road that ran parallel to a highway. We could *see* the highway from the road - it was so dumb!

We use WAZE mostly now. But I am obsessed with paper maps and I don't always like the way WAZE or Google Maps or the IPHONE Maps app or Mapquest tell us to go places.

There are times we would rather go a route that takes a little longer but has much less traffic and more scenery, therefore less stress. So I will analyze every which way to try to arrive at a "better" way to "get there from here".
