Hi, my brother hasn't flown for several years, and is planning a trip next spring from Honolulu to New Orleans. Due to his size and a previous injury, he wants to fly business or first class for the extra leg room and hopefully wider seat.

I almost always fly coach, and recommended Alaska because their coach is pretty roomy.
What other airlines would you recommend for business or first class that would be the best bang for the buck for roominess? His priority is being able to semi-stretch out or recline, so free drinks or similar perks are lowest or no priority.

Thanks in advance!

Delta has lie-flat business class seats on some flights to Hawaii. My flight next month has them. Unfortunately, I will gaze at the disappointedly as I walk past them on the way to my coach seats.

I ALWAYS check www.seatguru.com when booking long flights. There are great and horrible first class seats on different planes and configurations in the same airline (American, I'm talking about you).

Many airline's now have "Economy Comfort" seats with extra width and leg room at just a little more than standard 'Steerage' price, and waay less than First or Business class. We book these when available.

Thanks everyone for your responses. My brother mentioned Delta, and good to know they have lie-down business seats. (The last coach seat DH had on Delta from Honolulu several years ago was so cramped, DH said never again.) I'll remind my brother too of seatguru and tell him about Economy Comfort. Altho' I think he has convinced himself he needs at least business class, but he's willing to pay for it...

He would love to take a cruise from Honolulu to the mainland. But because of limited itineraries and Jones act, it's not logistically possible. He and my mother are travelling to New Orleans to go on a 3 week cruise. I'm pretty sure they'll fly thru Seattle where I am, so they can break their trip up a bit.

Celebrity has a cruise from Hawaii which ends up in Vancouver... 10 nights. It is considered a Transpacific (repositioning cruise).

Alaska now has a Premier Class seating section. But I don't think the seats are any wider than coach. The pitch, however, is longer (more legroom).

Those seats generally have a 3 or 4 extra inches of legroom, but no additional width.

I recently flew to Texas and back on Delta from Newark. I sat in comfort + or whatever they called it. I didn't even notice any extra legroom. At least I had an aisle seat.
