I have done this and have also gotten the spg amex to get 6 points per dollar paid on maintenance fees.

Was going to use the chase Marriott card but the extra point made us use the new spg card. Thanks to tuggers that confirmed that we get 2 spg points for paying our maintenance fees. I can confirm that is what we got when paying our Marriott maintenance fees.

Yes, I opened an SPG account to link with my MR account to get SPG Platinum status.
I have not yet stayed at one of the SPG hotels since doing so, although I am looking at these now as an option whenever I need to book a stay.
There really is nothing to lose though.
