I am thinking to take the Coast Starlight train to Portland, and return by the The San Joaquins train.

Do Amtrak ticket prices change for the same route similar to the way airline tickets do?
How far in advance should I purchase the Amtrak tickets in order to get a good price?
Is the fare much different If I purchase at the station on the depature day vs online weeks in advance?

Any other suggestions are welcome! Thank you.

Amtrak has the best prices if you know your travel dates in advance. I don't know how far in advance you need to book to get the best deals, but I'd say at least 2 months out. They also have sales/promotions, so do check their site or sign up for notifications.

Just like airlines, weekend travel dates are more expensive. Purchase day of travel ticket at the station and you'll be paying the highest fare there is.

Unlike airlines, they have senior discounts.

The San Joaquins don't go to Portland so you could have a problem there. If you are planning to get a sleeper that's where the real savings are in buying early.
