We switched to their auto insurance a couple years ago. We saved considerable money ($500+) annually over similar coverage we had with Nationwide.

I've had Ameriprise for years, on the house and cars. I can't tell you how much I saved, since I've had it so long, I don't remember. (Although "hundreds" comes to mind, at the time, just for the house.) Every time I try and find another company with cheaper insurance, Ameriprise still comes out on top. As long as they're the cheapest, I'll stay with them.

We now have AAA, which has saved us a ton over State Farm which we had for 20 years. How are the rates of Ameriprise compared with AAA and is their claim process fair, for those who have filed a claim?

How about their service and claims process (filing and the settlement of their automobile and homeowners claims)?

I had two claims with them. One for where another driver backed in to me in a drive through and another for a cracked driver's door window. In the case of the drive through incident, they took my claim and had me get an estimate from their preferred provider. At that time they provided a discount on the deductible for going with their preferred repair shop. I don't think they do that anymore. IN the end, the other driver's insurance covered the claim and I went through their preferred repair shop. In the case of the side window, the deductible was higher than the cost of repairing it myself, so I just paid out of pocket and cancelled the claim. They seemed attentive in the claims process, but no telling if our premiums would have increased if they had to pay out. We didn't have any increases because of the claims.

Spouse had a claim for lightly rear-ending another car at an intersection, when the front car stopped suddenly. Damage to both cars was repaired, and Ameriprise extended "accident forgiveness." Rates did not increase the following year.

I haven't had to use them for claims, but I'd expect nothing short of solid performance. This company is "the" company Costco refers their best members to. If Amerirpise was a flaky outfit, that relationship would be long gone. That says something for them.

As to rates, compared to other companies, you'll have to call them and ask for a quote, since everybody is different. With your current policy in hand, call in and ask Ameriprise for a quote for the same coverage. They'll give it to you over the phone. You can decide if it's a better rate. My guess is it will be.

Ameriprise is not a mutual, it is a insurance corporation. Something to keep in mind, but probably doesn't really matter in the end. It just isn't owned by the members and the pursuit of profit is there.
