...including those who opted out of sharing with law enforcement. I may be a bit of a tinfoil-hat-wearing crank, but I don't understand why anyone would use one of these services (or own a smart speaker, a video doorbell, etc.)

Remember within the last year or so, a serial killer was found using one of the private DNA companies. They took the DNA they had from the perpetrator in the late 70s/early 80s and cross-checked with ones in the service(s). They did not find the actual person, but based on the DNA being somewhat identical, they eliminated his family, leaving him as the only one. Once they had him, they matched with the perp's DNA and made the arrest.

So.....no warrant has ever granted any LE full and complete unfettered access to anything.
That said, this is a disturbing but somewhat anticipated result.

I would expect this to hit SCOTUS in no time at all.

Don't you find it interesting that the 'detective' is now an international celebrity on all the news feeds? I'm sure that's helping with his case load and closing those dusty cold jackets.
The judge in question should have granted him access to the entire INTERWEB's regardless of preference.
Heck, if one judge in Florida can overturn personal privacy rights of millions of law-abiding US CITIZENS with the stroke of a pen.....why not try to rule the world? (Pinky)

Me thinks this headline is 90% clickbait and 9% scary truth....that will be challenged.
you know exactly what the other 1% is.

This is very scary, no law enforcement person or agency should have that must authority to look at the entire private DNA database. This law case is going to take some time going thru the various states court systems; before it reach the SCOTUS.

IMHO, look for the bad guys attorneys to fight against using private DNA databases by law enforcement agencies in court cases decisions.

The infamous serial killer, serial rapist, and burglar, Joseph James DeAngelo, a/k/a "The East Area Rapist", "Golden State Killer" and "Diamond Knot Killer".

California law enforcement and the FBI used the same company named in this ruling, "GEDmatch" to identify him. His 12 plus years reign of terror included at least, 13 murders, 50 rapes and at least 120 burglaries.

The company, GEDmatch, at the time of the arrest said that it had always informed users that its databases can be used for purposes other than genealogical research.

Suspected Potomac River Rapist, Who Terrorized DC Area in the '90s, Arrested

Police say they used forensic genealogy techniques to close the case. A DNA test taken by a family member of Warrick led investigators to him.

The suspect, Giles Daniel Warrick, was arrested Tuesday in South Carolina. Warrick also is believed to have raped seven women in Montgomery County, Maryland, and two women in D.C. between 1991 and 1998.

The cold case devastated victims and vexed investigators for decades, though the attacker's DNA was found at many of the crime scenes.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham called the arrest "bittersweet."

"I can't begin to imagine what the families have suffered over these 29 years," he said.

By the way, no "clickbate", Just a bit of satisfaction for the victims and their families.
