8 Tips To Make Your Japan Trip Easier
By Christina Liao/ Living/ Travel/ Vogue/ vogue.com

"Traveling to a foreign country can be distressing in many ways: language barriers, geographical unfamiliarity, and trying to spend wisely are just some of the concerns that arise. Even when a destination is popular and well-traversed by tourists, it can still be hard to discover the best tips and tricks for seamless navigation. Japan is certainly no exception—if anything, the country in all of its wonderful glory can be one of the most challenging for English-speaking visitors. What do you do when a menu is only available in Japanese? Is there a way to save money on those high-priced Shinkansen (bullet trains)? In a destination notorious for hard-to-acquire reservations, how do you get a seat at a top-notch restaurant? To answer all of these questions, and more, we’ve compiled eight tips that will help assuage many of your worries and make your trip to this amazing island nation easier...."

Tips and guides will really save your time when traveling. Actually, its not only with Japan but also with other countries. Personally, I always rely in booking our trips with a travel agent. I find it convenient because they offer packages that are cheaper.

Have the place/hotel etc where you're going to, printed in Japanese kanji, not English, for taxis and other transportation modes.
Should be able to get this from the hotel's website or their concierge or reservations.

If traveling by train, use one of the Japanese takuhaibin package delivery services to send your luggage between cities
(hence the need to have your destination printed in kanji)
Bullet trains like Italian trains, have very little space for regular size suitcases.

We just vacationed in Japan for 3 weeks this past summer. We took 3 carryons total for the 4 of us. It was really easy to take the Shinkansen (bullet train) with the carryon. Unlike when I lived in Japan 20+ years ago, almost every station has escalators. The bullet train is actually more spacious than all the trains we took in Europe. If we go back, I would actually consider taking 2 25 inch suitcases for the 4 of us

Luggage delivery in Japan is very popular, convenient, and reliable. The only problem for me is that they usually pick up your luggage the night before you leave. So you have to sort that out.

Train station also have many lockers of 3 sizes that you can leave your luggages in. I found it very helpful to leave luggages at the train station after checkout from the hotels and continued on sightseeing in the city before hopping on the bullet train to next city
