I was recently given a laptop computer. It is a fairly low end ACER. It has the Windows XP Home genuine sticker on the bottom. However, it has Windows XP PRO installed. In the course of upgrading it (additional memory) and getting the latest updates online I now get a "this might be a counterfit windows program" warning. It gives me the option to correct the problem but I am wondering is there a way to just go back to the "home" version or is it worth the money to buy the "pro".

Thanks

Sorry, going back is not an option. The best bet is to install a new version of Home or Pro, depending on your needs. Compare the features of the two versions here ... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx You could check some prices on the Internet, like Buy.Com or Tiger Direct. I think the price difference might be around $50. Hope this helps. ..... Ray

Windows Update

Did the computer come with a restore CD? If so, you can do a restore from that CD and likely be okay. Or, has the windows program actually quit working?? If not, you can turn off auto updates and go on your merry way assuming you don't care about security updates. Or, you can buy an 'official' copy and do the right thing! :p
