I just noticed this on our HGVC member website:

"Please be advised, as of Nov. 1, 2019, self-parking will be $49 per night and valet parking fee will be $59 per night."

I will be there later this month on a quick short stay before moving on to the Marriott Ko Olina and DVC Aulani. I was planning on just sucking it up, and paying the $45 nightly fees for just 3 nights. I guess I should just consider the nearby Marina or Hale Koa parking, just need to check into what the max daily rate is at both place.

The parking fees of Waikiki are why last time I relied on The Bus and used shuttles. You can navigate Honolulu area reasonably easily just using the bus, or use a ride share if you don't want to deal with public transit.

Understand what you are saying. In this case, since it's 3 nights only, we can skip a car rental and take a shuttle / taxi to Waikiki from airport and back to pick up the rental car for my two weeks stay at Ko Olina. The 3 extra days rental price compared to shuttle / taxi back and forth is pretty much a wash. But the parking fees may sway us.

On another note, I thought max daily rate at Hale Koa parking was $30 something, but in checking, I guess it is $36 if you are DOD, but $73 max daily rate for general public (ouch!!!)

Oh well, I will need to figure out Marina parking or just forgo the rental car for 3 days.

That is great that you found what we did since 2009. You don't need a car in Honolulu. We walk to everything in Waikiki and Ala Moana. If we are going to the Museum of Art, Downtown, or further we take the BUS. Once you are a Senior the BUS is $1/ride or since we stay for many months $6/month or $35/year for unlimited rides.

Yep, I actually found that thread and was reading thru it as well as a bunch of other threads related to parking. Unless price changed, it appears Marina parking is $1/hr prepaid.

That is what we used this past March (that was the price). It actually is closer to LT than the parking garage. We actually rented from National at the airport, used the car to load up with groceries for the week, parked the park at marina overnight, and then returned the car to National at HHV before exceeding 24 hrs. We weren't charged a dropoff fee.

That is great. We often do get a car when vacationing at other cities for the first day to get from the airport and stock up the refrigerator. We haven't done it in Honolulu since we are so tired when we get there from NY after an 11 hour flight and getting up at 2:00 AM that we just eat a little dinner and go to bed. How did you get away without paying a drop-off fee?

I actually have no idea. We were prepared to pay to dropoff fee, but they just didn't charge us. I don't know if it was a mistake or maybe because I do have status with National. I was expecting to pay the dropoff fee.

Uber is very cheap and reliable. If you are just driving around town to go eat or shopping, that is so much cheaper than renting a car.

Not to mention, not having to deal with parking.

We still rent a car, but only for one day at a time. We pick it up in the morning and drop it off at night. We only do this 1-3 a trip.

Do you have experience with doing this on the BI at King Land as well? A car for 18 days is over $1000 CDN for the entire holiday and we do plan to spend at least 4 days golfing right at the resort. It will be our first time there.

I haven't done this as we always rent a car for the full length of time. I do know they have car rental available at the Hilton Waikoloa, don't know if you can also get cars at Kingsland.

You can't get a car at Kingsland, but National has an office at the Hilton hotel.

Looks like Alamo does as well.

Also check the Waikoloa Marriott. Looks like there is an Enterprise there.

You can take the shuttle from any of the Hilton's to and from the Hilton Hotel to pick up and return the rent a car if you don't want to walk. You would need to walk or take a cab to the Marriott. We did look into renting a car from the airport for a short period of time and then dropping it off at the Hilton Hotel, however, the limited company choice as well as the drop off fee made it quite expensive.

You may want to check this out. We are renting a car on the DiscountHawaiiCarRental website for less than $500 for 15 nights from December 7-22.

I like having a car on the BI. However, for the days you're just hanging around Waikoloa, you don't need a car. Also, free parking at KL.

I agree. However, we will be at the Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort for a week then 8 days at the Bay Club. We will be with 4 other adults who have never been to Hawaii so that we will be doing a lot of exploring as well as trips to Costco, Walmart, Target, and the Supermarket. We will not be able to stock the refrigerator for an entire week like we normally do. With 6 people and most of them haven't lived together for very long so that they all have differences in what they eat so we will be lucky to go a couple of days without running out of stuff or someone deciding on making something that wasn't planned on. They also all have different sleeping patterns as far as getting up early and going to bed early. It will be a real circus.

No. I always get a car for my entire stay on the Big Island. That’s a necessity for us. We drive to the beach or somewhere everyday. Not to mention trips to Costco.

Just out of curiosity, are you planning one car for six adults or will the group have multiple cars?

We regularly travel with another couple. On previous Big Island trips we each had our own cars. My wife and her girlfriend were suggesting we save a few bucks and share a car for the week. I like saving money, but less excited about being tied together for most all activities...

I always insist on separate cars.

We are having 2 cars. My husband and I will be having one car. The Hawaii Island trip is the first leg of our winter trip to Hawaii which includes many weeks in Honolulu and won't end until an eleven day trip to Kauai in May. We travel very heavy and need at minimum a full size car just for the 2 of us and the luggage. The other 2 couples will be getting a minivan and will only have a few bags so they should be fine with 4 people and luggage in that size vehicle. Since they are new to Hawaii we probably will be escorting them to most if not all of the activities.

By the way since you mentioned being less excited about being tied together for activities, I wanted to mention that one of the advantages of staying in Honolulu rather than the other parts of Hawaii is that since you don't need a car to get around you can vacation with people independently without cars altogether. This was great when we vacationed with our Grandchildren, Daughter and Son-in-Law. At times we had the Grandchildren for an activity and our Daughter and Son-in Law could be free to have date nights.

I agree Honolulu has certain advantages such as ease to getting around, and we enjoy our time there. However it does have a very different and experience from a place like Big Island or Kauai.
