So as I am looking into buying resale I have to decide to book a nice home week or go for wherever is the cheapest amintence just for points. How many of you guys actually go to your home resort every year? I know this is different for every person but just wondering how often people go back to the same place. Personally my wife and I don’t think we would go to the same place over and over. But at the same time if we see going to buy something why not get it in a nice place. Kind of torn.

We go to our home resort often. In fact, we use our "expensive" W. 57th bHC points exclusively at W. 57th. However, we never book Home Week. We don't stay that long. So, the idea of staying where you own your points is still somewhat different from using Home Week.

My guess is that the majority of people here on this boar do not use Home Week, but a larger percentage of what I will call "less knowledgeable" owners (only because they are not Members here) do use it.

Cheers.

We haven’t used ours....... however, we have traded a week in our season.

In April we are going to Breckinridge. Snagged a 3 bedroom for a week!

I agree with you about the majority of people here on Tug. However, while I am not disregarding the value of the timeshare user education you get here at TUG, I think a lot of people use their home week since they are in the mode of the traditional timeshare owner who bought the timeshare as a nice weeks vacation at a resort and location they like with no exchange fee and no need to use a computer website to see the possibilities to book all the other possibilities. I look at the ability to use the website to reserve vacations at resorts and locations that I don't own for as long as my points will allow as a challenge and a great benefit of owning HGVC.

I think really you need to answer the question because it really depends upon if you are planning to book home week or not. On some I do and some I don’t. So, some I bought just for home week advantage and some I only bought for the points.

+1 we are similar to @brp We go to our home resort in NYC but don't book home week because we either want to stay shorter duration, or in different sized units.

We will never stay at our home resort in Vegas. We use the points to stay at other resorts.

Never, in 12 years of ownership.

We stay at Kings Land where we own almost every year, but have yet to book our home week.

It seems like we end up staying at the same 3 or 4 HGV resorts around the US.

Never. I bought in Orlando to use in Hawaii, which is what I do with most of my points.

I use home week exclusively, to the point of owning at an affiliate so that I don't have to join HGVC.

On the other hand, I own in Hawaii (at Bay Club). I use them as a surrogate second home in the winter. . .

(I used to own at Marriott Royal Palms in Orlando. The MF differential between Royal Palms and Bay Club (non HGVC) has shrunk to less than $300 a week and that is for a top floor biggest penthouse unit - and lower floor shaves off nearly $100 off the comparison). And if you buy a post 2010 week, you can't get it converted to Marriott DC points anyways, so that is pretty much an apple-to-apples comparison. And the winter weather is better (warmer) in Hawaii.)

I certainly don't mean to disparage the traditional go-for-a-week timeshare use model. I just have a feeling that a large number of people within HGVC don't even know about the points-to-use-elsewhere-or-elsewhen even exists, and might use it if they did. Or they might not.

Cheers.

I actually believe HGVC is the opposite. There are many limits for using the home week and the reservation system makes it very easy to reserve with points so most people don't end up using their home week even if they return to the same resort they bought; the lingua franca of HGVC is points. To boot, people who buy from the developer get bonus points so that reinforces the points orientation. I never really understood how to use our home week until I joined TUG.

MVC and Vistana weeks owners tend to use their home week because that is how the system is designed and most people don't know how to trade or use points elsewhere unless they have enrolled their weeks or have taken time to learn about Staroptions.

Both but I mostly use my home weeks. The home weeks I use are Hgvc affiliates in Marco Island which can at certain times be hard to trade into.

It depends on where you want to go. If they are hard to get you might want to own there.

This. I frequent a couple of HGVC Facebook groups and there are so many questions on what a home week is and how to book with no fee. The only time I would use my home week is if we were able to get a New Years reservation at the Flamingo.

Yup, sometimes home season is the only way to get the week you want.

Among others we own west57 in NYC and as @CalGalTraveler and @brp said we don’t book home week but just Home resort. We stretch our points and go several times a year.

Our resort in Vilamoura we book each year during home week, it’s a difficult resort to get into if you don’t own there at least during summer time.

Our Vegas resort we haven’t stayed at since before we bought the contract, so it’s purely sleep around points :)

Ha Ha...so to riff a famous saying, those that "Buy in Vegas, don't stay in Vegas!"

And @Cyberc admits that as a Vegas owner he uses his points to "sleep around." :) LOL weekend humor...

For me it is a mix. We bought a couple of fixed holiday weeks at affiliates on Marco Island that we use most years. I also have a fixed ski week at Valdoro that will be used most years. But I don't ever see me using my home week at SeaWorld.

I think you will find that people who buy into the Florida affiliates, Oahu, and ski weeks use them. Others not so much. We have two Lagoon tower (Oahu) 2BR weeks, one of which we always use and the other of which depends on how many people come with us that year.

I think we’ve used out home week, a 2 bedroom at LV Blv only once. We have used club reservations s to book back into our home resort in a 1 bedroom and even penthouse units. For the last several years we’ve been booking shorter stays in a 1 bedroom Grand Plus at Elara because we like the location better. We’ve also stayed in Oahu twice and on the big island of Hawaii once.

We did follow the rule of "buy where you want to go", so 2 of our timeshares we go to every year because we love the locations (New Orleans, LA and Palm Desert, CA) The other two, we go to every other year and trade every other year. This has allowed us plenty of weeks all over the world and we have had some really nice trades. We also occasionally split our two bedroom Marriott for two weeks instead of one. I hope everyone else enjoys their timeshare vacations as much as we do. Next weekend we are off to Park City, Utah (our every other year place).
