We are considering doing a mini Reunion over new years and the smoky mountains is one of the potential locations. I know we can rent large cabins with great views and lots of amenities. We are not interested in water parks and with it being winter I see some short walks and maybe some hiking but not taking many trips in the car.

Are any of the time shares in the wilderness with amazing views or are they all like apartments in town ?

I think renting a house is a good option for what you want and that time of year. I can't speak for the timeshares there.

For a large group I would suggest a house - but get one with the largest main area possible. For my daughter's Yosemite wedding we had a place with an awesome great room but tiny bedrooms. So everyone hung out in the great room, almost out of necessity, and it was very fun. Over New Year's 2018 we rented a different place with better access/parking/larger bedrooms but the great room was too snug to have everyone comfortably hang out.

Edit - I didn't quite answer your question. Here's the other side:
In 2018 we were able to get two timeshare units at Northstar in Truckee (near Lake Tahoe) to celebrate my husband's 60th. All of the kids came, plus some of their friends who are like kids to us. We were able to get the units across from each other but again, it was squishy with 8 of us in the living room of our unit where everyone congregated. So for a family reunion, I'd be inclined to rent something that had a better set up for a large group than a timeshare. It's workable, certainly, but the big cabin will probably be better suited to the group.

Amazing views? Love the Smokies. Been there many times. Maybe there will be more views since you will be there in the winter without the leaves. I've heard Gatlinburg is very charming with the Christmas lights.

I definitely recommend the cabin route. They are very popular for family gatherings. I've stayed at Westgate which was very new and near the entrance to Gatlinburg and the park. It was very, very nice - a lockout with a kitchenette off a nice unit with a deck where my hosts stayed.

We rented a log cabin from here for a week. We were very pleased.

Looks great, we rented several cabins over the years through companies like this....read all reviews.
plenty of time to check out the cabin and price you like------do it early or the best cabins are taken.

There are no timeshares I know of that will provide what you describe you want.

Just make sure the selected cabin has a truly great view or you'll be disappointed. Some views can be obscured by trees,
but you'll realize the best ones when you see the actual photos. Inside they're all great, but the view makes or breaks the trip.

The best time for brilliant Fall foliage in the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area seems to be THE FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER!!!!!
For us, October seemed always to be too early, and mid-to-late November it was all gone.

Lots to see and do there, and frankly the area is pretty inexpensive for both food and activities.

Sadly, there won't be much leaf color this year. Too much drought.
