We have the Marriott Ocean for 7 nights then moving to Divi Dutch for 2 nights. Although we have never been to Aruba I really don't know if we need a car the full trip. I'm thinking of renting for the 7 nights and return car, and go without during our stay at Divi Dutch and taxi to the airport for our return home. Any thoughts to this plan? I also see Tropic Car Rental has a 5 day rental special.

You should be fine without a car for a couple days. We rented a car at the airport once for a full week...it was parked most of the week. Other trips we were fine with taxis and/or Arubus. Some resorts have rental car reps onsite if you want to rent for a day... we did that once to drive to Baby Beach to spend the day.

What area do you normally stay? I'm reading Palm Beach has a lot of restaurants we can walk to which we like to do and not hassle parking.

We usually stay in Palm Beach... always my preference because of the location. One year we stayed at Divi Golf and Beach. We didn't have a car at all that week, we used taxis and Arubus to get around.

When we stayed in Aruba 6 years ago we used a private taxi service and it was great. They picked us up at the airport and drove us directly to our resort. After our week they also came back to the resort and returned us to the airport. We never rented a car. bullytaxi79@hotmail.com Cell: 011-297-593-7520. As we exited the airport he was standing there with our names on a card. It was so easy. The other service is TAXI 63. (Ivan Gordijk) - cell 011-297-592-6356 email: ijgordijk@setarnet.aw

Unless you are great explorers, taking taxis the entire time is certainly feasible. The Marriott is right in the middle of Palm Beach shops and restaurants, and there's really no need for a rental car. We rented a car the entire week, and didn't regret it because it was handy for grocery runs and exploring the island, but we could have made do with taxis except the day we visited the Donkey Sanctuary. Not sure if we'd have saved any money taking taxis v renting a car, but taxis were certainly convenient and plentiful.

Your strategy is doable, but given that you'd have to return the car by a certain time (which may or may not be convenient to your check-in time at Divi), plus hail a taxi from the airport to Divi Dutch, and then again from Divi Dutch to the airport on your departure day, I'm not sure that it will save you any money. Plus it adds unnecessary hassle IMO.

Personally, I'd either rent a car the entire 9 days or take taxis the entire 9 days and possibly rent a car for day trips.
