The Thomas Cook was reportedly the "inventor" of packaged tours.
Apparently, he was the first to offer bundled tours to Switzerland + Italy.

"The growing popularity of the pick-and-mix type of travel that allows consumers to book their holiday packages separately, as well as new kids on the block like Airbnb, has seen the travel industry change beyond all recognition in the past decade, as consumers book travel, accommodation and car hire independently," said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets

This may be the end to the travel agency business as we know it unless it recreates itself in some way. People are simply not booking their vacations in the same way.

I think the last time I personally used a travel agency was in the early 90's. I'm surprised they actually survived for this long.

I agree, I have not used a travel agency in over 10 years. Even my company has our employees book their own travel through the cheapest venue

Our DDiL's sister is a flight attendant (not with Thomas Cook) and posted this RIP Thomas Cook video on her Facebook page this morning.

The scenery is amazing.

Word is, there are quite a few employees that feel quite different.

I'm quite impressed that the British government is chartering planes to bring folks home. That's going above and beyond IMHO.
I suppose that getting 150,000 tax paying citizens home has less consequences than leaving them stranded all over the globe on their own. It would go far with public opinion. I'd imagine that those with travel insurance will be given the 'opportunity' to file claims. Let the travel insurance carriers slug it out with the bankruptcy trustees after the liquidation of Thomas Cook's assets.

I read how some Hotels are trying to hold folks semi-hostge because they had not received payment from Thomas Cook. Going so far as locking their gates.

Upcoming Election

Sounds expensive and a lot of tax dollars.

150,000 voters + plus all their relatives = get them back

We flew Condor from Orlando to Frankfurt a few years back.
Decent fares, but seats lacked padding for those of us w-boney bottoms.
