I have to see my ortho doctor tomorrow and set a date to have reverse shoulder replacement. I have put this off for three years since I got hurt pulling tree limbs out of the pool after Hurricane Matthew. I have been getting cortisone shots every 3 months or so for relief but I can’t put it off much longer. I think my voice is getting deeper from the steroids. Has anyone out there been through this surgery. I looked it up on web med and it looks scary. Don’t ever do research on an upcoming surgery!

Get the surgery, if it will improve your quality of life. If you have a dr that you trust , then go for it.
Best Wishes

Update: My Orthopaedic doctor tells me there is a new procedure that is being tested in Europe where they insert a balloon above the humerus to provide more cushion when the cartilage is deteriorating. This will be available in the US some time next year. Since I have good range of motion in my arm, I elected to wait. For those of you who may have been told you must have shoulder replacement, this could be a good alternative to going through this procedure.

I had a total shoulder replacement (not reverse) in March. The worst part was having my shoulder immobilized in a sling 24/7 for the first month, except for showers. It was difficult finding positions to sleep and frustrating trying to get the pillows and blankets in the right place. The physical therapy didn't start until the sling came off, so by then my shoulder was pretty weak and range of movement was poor. It's improved a great deal in 6 months, but progress seems so slow. I can reach my hand over my head now, but have trouble getting something out of my back pocket. It took about 4 months before I could say that it felt better than before the surgery, but I'm glad I did it. I've heard that a normal shoulder replacement is easier than a reverse. If they're doing a reverse your rotator cuff must be shot, and you won't regain full range of movement. It may take a long time, but you should be able to say you were glad you did it.
