We will be in Halifax this time next month. Everyone should have power back by then, but the other impacts can be more long lasting. I hope not to be too surprised by some of the damage in the province. I remember our first visit after Hurricane Juan swept through in 2003, when I was truly shocked to see the extent of the damage.
I spent many hours as a boy, when we were stationed in Halifax, playing in the beautiful Halifax Public Gardens and Point Pleasant Park. I was shocked on our return visit to see how many tall, old trees had been knocked down by the force of Juan's winds. Both locations seemed so much more barren and open.
I know it is much less important than someone who has suffered personal injuries or damage to their property, or even lost their life. But I was nevertheless saddened about what had been lost. With so many trees down that were over 100 years old, I realized I would never again in my lifetime see either location looking the way it had been.
