Mu husband is attending a large convention on Oahu [in June], 2020 at the Honolulu Convention Center, and I am tagging along. I would like to attach a timeshare week to this, ideally [redacted], but would do a week after the convention, checking in [dates redacted] if that's all I could get.

I am looking for a legal condo to rent close to the convention center and not having much luck. I am aware of the new laws concerning zones and short term rentals. Does anyone have any experience renting a condo close to the convention center they would share ? Ideally I would like a unit with a kitchen or kitchenette, king bed, a lanai, and at least a peek of the water. But I would be willing to compromise.

I have a search in with II for Ko Olina with a Marriott, Thanksgiving week 1 bedroom at Shadow Ridge. And I do my own on line searches daily. I would take a studio, but would love a larger unit.

I have been watching units on AirBNB disappear while I wring my hands over this, and now my favorite "saved units" are not available. I have never rented from AirBNB before, so that is part of my hand wringing.

We spent one night in Oahu years ago when we took a voluntary overnight bump on our leg home. We saw downtown and went to Pearl Harbor and that is the extent of our Oahu knowledge. My husband likes the quieter islands, so this might be my only chance to see Oahu.

Date redacted so the post above doesn't look like a rental request.

Hopefully your OGS at Ko Olina will come through, but that is a long way from the convention center. As a back up plan I would make a reservation at a hotel, including considering the timeshares at Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki (hilton.com). As the date gets closer and if you don't get or want a unit at Ko Olina you could also consider renting a unit at MKO or HHV from an owner. If available, prices tend to come down as check in dates approach. Good luck.

Best regards.

Try calling Discount hotels and ask about the Timeshares at Ilikai. I think it is what you are looking for. They have one bedroom condo units that rent by the day.

The Ala Moana hotel is ideal for being close to the convention center and also right next to the mall. They might have Suites, but probably most of the rooms are hotel rooms.

You need to book something soon because the summer will sell out.

The Convention Center is adjacent to Ala Moana Center, and is so close to Waikiki, you could easily stay there. You might consider the Imperial of Waikiki, on Lewers Street. It's not fancy, but it's in the middle of everything. It's a timeshare, but also rents by the night. Not too far from where the Convention Center is located.

Ko Olina is about as far away from the Convention Center as you could get - and traffic inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon is brutal. For purposes of attending a convention, I would NOT recommend trying to stay clear out there.

Thanks to all who responded, it is much appreciated. I will be looking into all your suggestions. To be clear, I want to add the Ko Olina week BEFORE or AFTER the convention, and not have my husband commute from there to the convention.

I called Discount Hotels Hawaii and they said June 2020 was too far out for them, to call again after the first of the year.

I'm not sure how long you've had the search in bu many of the Ko Olina units have come and gone by now though I'd say your chances of a studio or 1 BR for June are excellent as long as it's not the very end, basically 4th of July. Taking the week before or after would likely more than double your chances as earlier June will be easier than later June. While you can't to it online with an OGS, you can call II and have them set it up fro specific start dates if you want though it might decrease your chances of success. You might also look for a Hilton or Marriott owner privately and arrange a private rental. You might even do that for the week of the conference for the Hilton as it's not that far to the area needed. I'd work out a backup plan, maybe a cash reservation for a studio at Ko Olina or Aulani (studio or hotel side).

That changes things. KoOlina is a fine place to stay, if you're vacationing. Just not from a commuter point of view.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is one of the closest to the convention center and usually has vacancies. The Ilikai has small apartments with kitchens and is right next door to the Hilton Hawaiian Village and they may have vacancies for the time you need.

I ended up booking a studio at the Ilikai through AirBNB. It had lots of recent positive reviews, and has almost everything on my check/wish list, king bed, ocean view, kitchen, lanai, and close enough to walk to the convention center. No in-unit washer and dryer. Timeshares have spoiled me !

Now I need to secure my week at Ko Olina the week before or the week after the convention. I do have an on-going search, There were several June studio units that popped up in the wee hours last night, but they were all too late in the month.

Thanks for all the useful info.

I am pleased to add that I got the very week I wanted early this morning at Ko Olina, the week before the convention, and a two bedroom to boot ! Even the right check-in day, so there was no single night between the timeshare week and the start of the convention to have to fill in elsewhere.
