I am planning a trip to Marbrisa from Dec 28th, 2019 to Jan 1st, 2020. A studio is available, but I'd like a one-bed room. The reservation is using 2020 points.

A couple of questions:
  • I cannot move this reservation to 2020 even though it uses 2020 points. So the move and cancel trick won't work, correct?
  • If a 1 BR becomes available, I assume I can change without paying another reservation fee? What would be the last day to do this?

My other plan is to book a hotel using Hilton Honors points since it will cost me nothing to cancel. Canceling HGVC studio reservation will cost me ~$130. HGVC studio is comparable to a hotel room at Hilton Graden Inn (has microwave and fridge). I will then look for 1 BR to open near the 30-day cancellation deadline for HGVC points bookings. Or book with open season.

Why couldn't you move the reservation to 2020 if it's made with 2020 points?

You could change the reservation to a larger point unit right up until the day before the stay. It's always ok to spend more points.

I'm a little bit confused about this. I read another thread where people said you cannot walk reservations into a different calendar year. Technically, my dates are in week 52 or 2019.

I believe if you have saved your points to the next year, it’s possible. You can always call customer service and ask if it’s possible.
Good to know. I'll call and confirm. I don't usually trust CS people as many of them make up rules instead of digging up the answer.

This is a timeshare. A time-honored and well-trusted business. None of their employees would make anything up...

Cheers.
