There are places science has gone where it should not have.

That something can be done does not mean it should be done.

"More of these serious mix-ups likely go unnoticed, especially if there is no obvious racial mismatch. And they only become public when patients choose to come forward. “We have no idea how often [this kind of mistake] happens, and there’s no requirement that prevents it from happening” says Dov Fox, a law professor at the University of San Diego and the author of Birth Rights and Wrongs."

And IVF has been around for over 40 years with over 8 million babies having been conceived and born. Can you imagine the questions that may cause?

I don't understand why there isn't more oversight on this. It is pretty serious business, and expensive. The people should have some protections. When I get bloodwork done, each vial gets the same barcode. Nothing leaves the room unmarked.
How much more careful these fertility labs should be with babies-in-the-making.

Science opened this door and now science has opened another door. DNA testing.

Infidelities, adoptions, cover-ups and lies that many thought would never be uncovered. New findings every day that someone was conceived from donated sperm or even that they were switched at birth. Secrets covered up in the past, are starting to come out.

Having gone through IVF, I wouldn’t throw the bathwater just yet. I also have family who were surrogates. It’s a medical procedure so there will be mistakes. As much as I feel do the families, how can you make the best of the situation?

Good point. While I acknowledge a terrible wrong has happened in these cases, in the long run, I want to ask myself does it really matter? If you found out your child was not genetically yours, would you love them less? Would you not feel that they were your child? Would the experiences you had with them over the years be in any way invalidated? What downside would there be to never find out there was a mistake in the first place?

I am also an adoptive parent. We only know soo much and we accept what we do know and celebrate the known. It’s not the easiest process but it’s about our children not us. And we should always remember it’s about our children.

I can't tell any difference between our adopted child and the other.

I am with you 100% on that.

Sometimes these home DNA kits turn-up stuff that might be better left unknown.
