“Oh, it was when he was at his best! But he was almost too much.”

Elvis was, "just a hunk, a hunk of burning love", you could say.

I was 10 or 11 when she hit the American music charts with "Downtown." I remember sitting at my Mother's piano and picking out the melody to the song, because I thought it was such a nice tune. It was right at about the beginning of my musical love affair with the radio. Music continues to be a force in my life, and that probably won't change.

Probably the hardest part is realizing that while I've grown up, so have my music idols. Reading that Petula Clark is in her 80s was almost shocking. In my mind, she is still the cute blonde in the mini skirt and go-go boots performing on Hullabaloo or Shindig. As they say, "And so it goes..." :)

Happiness can be something you experience or sometimes, it's something you remember.

Petula Clark was such an adorable figure and it was just something about that song. And yes, the lights were, "much brighter there" and back then you could, "forget all your troubles, forget all your cares".

Perhaps we do not know the true value of our moments, until they have undergone the test of our memory. :ponder:

Many years ago was fortunate to see Petula Clark with David Cassidy in Blood Brothers. A memorable performance.

Downtown was one of my mom's favorite songs. I liked it too. Dad passed at the end of 63 and is at FT Bliss. We moved to Central WA and would often go downtown to soda fountain. Mom passed in 69 at 29 and Downtown always reminds me of her dancing around. She had the moves.

My favorite memory of "Downtown" is having it come out of a local radio station while on a very hot school bus winding its way through some terrible "downtown" traffic. What makes this noteable? The downtown was in Moscow; the radio station was Soviet. It caught us all a little by surprise. (This was about a week before the coup that would lead to Boris Yeltsin being in power.)

While I recognize Petula Clark's name, I would never have been able to identify her with this song, or pick her out of a lineup. #beforemytime

Petula Clark and Elvis were certainly part of 'the music of my life', but an 80 y.o. woman talking about a 3-some is more info than I can deal with. Please let it go. :)

Come on now, give her credit, for 86 she looks good.

To me, she will always be that cute girl, with that beautiful smile and tempting eyes. ;)

I had no idea she was a child star. Cliff saw her sing in French while he was in Nice, he thinks New Year's Eve 1964, when he was on leave from the army in Italy. He saw notices advertising her performance, but had never heard of her at that time. Reported back to base to learn he'd been transferred to Germany. We still have a French Petula Clark record somewhere. Guess what we are listening to now?

She was an entirely beguiling young woman in Finian's Rainbow in 1968. It was also Fred Astaire's final dancing performance in a movie. The underlying theme could be a little left-leaning for some but the music and performances, especially Astaire's, are charming. Currently available to view on several pay services (Youtube, Google play, Vudu, Fandango, iTunes, others?) @ $2.99.

[Edited to add..] A couple of Finian's Rainbow songs became pretty well known, 'How Are Things In Glocca Morra', and 'Old Devil Moon'.

Frank Sinatra also did a good version of Downtown. I always liked that one. I remember it as a kid.

There was a story online about Elvis and Priscilla. Basically, he groomed her by having her look like him even before she turned 18, and did not "consummate" their union until after they got married. She divorced him, but still loved him as a dear friend until he died. He was having affairs almost from day 1 of their courtship and all through their marriage.
