It's getting to the point then where you should bring your own EZ pass transponder with you. I'm assuming that this is possible. Not entirely sue how EZ works.

Since we live in California, I bring my FasTrak whenever I anticipate using a rental car in "remote" tolling areas -- usually the Bay Area, because of the bridges.

There's a comprehensive list of what systems are used world wide at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_toll_collection_systems

There is also a nice US map showing tolling systems. Google is finding me small images, but I know I've seen a nicer one somewhere.

Some roads in California have a website feature that lets you pay up to 5 days before (?) or after you use the road, without penalty (well, a small surcharge). Others don't advertise this, but if you call them you can head off an infraction.

We just rented a car in San Francisco and asked about the golden gate bridge toll . They wanted $39 /week or we could just go online and pre pay the toll for our car as long as we had a window of when we would cross the bridge ~$8. FYI Toll is charged only one way (into the city)

Tolls sure bother me. Especially when I rent a car in and stay in Arizona (no toll roads) and find a charge for tolls in Florida on my credit card for the exact time I'm in Arizona. Figure how fast I'd have to drive especially the last day and still get the rental car turned in on time.
Car rental company does nothing to help you.
Florida made me show proof of being in Arizona at that time (credit card statement).
The charge was taken off my credit card but now Highway dept. says they never received the fax so now the case is closed but it sounds like they are going to charge me again. I sent copy this time in US Mail but who knows if I will still be charged on cc or not. I'm guilty according to them unless I can prove I didn't do it.
Talking to them on the phone and asking them how I could be in two places at once and especially with the miles in between did me no good.

Couldn’t you just dispute the charge with your credit card company putting the burden of proof on them?

The problem is that the rental company paid the bill, so the CC charge is legit.
Even if the toll wasn't, you still have to go to the source to get it reversed.

Speaking of Dollar, I believe that is the company that is operated out of a suspicious foreign country, that I was very concerned about when DW went to FL by herself one summer, but it worked out.

Speaking of tolls, when we were going to pick someone up at the Clearwater airport, I inadvertently got in the FastPass lane. (I drive inadvertently sometimes. Good thing that is not monitored. :D). I saw the $100 fine sign, and the lanes were clear, so I pulled over to the parking area, and walked back off the roadway to where I could talk to the nearest toll-taker, expecting to be able to give her some money.

I could not. She said, "It's too late; they already have you."

We got a bill in the mail for $1.50, or whatever.

THis doesn't necessarily change the burden of proof. A disputed charge that the credit card removes doesn't always remove your legal obligation to pay for whatever you were charged for. Them having to collect just gets more difficult.

Both as a bankcard merchant and as a bankcard customer, I have never seen a charge back that was collected otherwise by the merchant.

But, for example, MasterCard's charge back rules are more than 400 pages long, so maybe it's in there somewhere.

Idle thought: we're referencing the devil in a thread on outlandish toll charges.

Seems fitting.

I suspect for a small toll charge, they wouldn't bother. But how did they charge a credit card? Was the charge really from a rental car company or the toll operator? If you don't pay a bill, you could be black listed from renting from that company again. If you have a transponder from the toll company and they charged to your account, then you are out of luck.

I could see situations where someone does a chargeback on a very large dollar purchase and the merchant tries to collect in court.
