I have a 25 year old Yamaha RX v670 that has a problem with blue tooth add on devices. It works perfect for what it is regarding the surround sound, cd playing and reciever but really sucks at bt. I see these old receivers selling for under $60 on ebay now days.

This receiver powers four speakers and a sub in the house as well as a pair of deck speakers.

So my question is should I replace this or is there a decent bt device. I tried three bt devices but all sound terrible.

Not sure what you’re looking for but we have a BT device for our outdoor system. Syncs with my cell phone and we use Pandora

Works great for that
Plugs into one of the rear inputs
I think we got it at Best Buy maybe $40

Your solution might be a Sonos connect. It would hook into your receiver via RCA inputs. It is NOT a BT device. It works on your Wifi and you can stream Pandora, iHeart radio , Your iTunes library, etc. Superior to BT really. You could find a used one on Craigslist for a decent price.

I have Sonos speakers all over my house and use a Connect:amp to power non Sonos speakers in my Living Room. You can keep that old stereo unit and modernize your whole system with a Connect.

I have tried three of these and while they do work the sound just isn't right using my phone.

That might work but if I go that route I think I would just upgrade my reciever to the new Yamaha 7 chanel with bt. Its about $450.

I will look into the Sonos connect but from what I can tell its about $300. Haven't looked at Craigslist yet so maybe.

Do you use an iPhone? Some of the modern receivers have Airplay built in which also works over WiFi and is superior to BT as well.

I use a Logitech BT receiver in my family room and another in my workshop. It cost $25 apiece. I use them in conjunction with Pandora. They synch up well and sound fine IMHO. My phone is an Android (Motorola Moto Z-force) that also works well with my JBL Charge 3 BT speaker. The JBL speaker sometimes is a bit fussy at synching up.

I'm wondering if you might be connecting the BT receiver to a high-sensitivity input to the receiver. On one receiver, I'm using my Tape 2 input. That is the same input that I use for my auxiliary CD player and antique VHS player. On the other one, I'm using the CD player input. If you are over-driving the input, it will badly distort. Or try swapping the inputs on the receiver. Perhaps it has a problem. Both of my systems are pleasant to listen to. They sound as good as the XM radio in my vehicles. Good bass, nice mid-range and nice clear high end. I don't know the percent distortion but it is not objectionable.

BTW, I tried my Android phone with a $700 Bose TV sound bar and it sounded phenomenal.

The other thing that could be happening is the output of the BT is messing up the receiver's surround sound synthesis. The blue tooth is, AKAIK, a two channel (left and right) device. It isn't surround sound. If you can turn off the surround sound it might be worth trying. Also, if you are using an iPhone, invite a friend over with an Android and Pandora.

Could you elaborate on how the BT device "really sucks"?? or "Just doesn't sound right". Distortion, frequency response, range, no bass, muddy highs, BT sampling rate?

The sound is very distorted with high volume. Not too bad when using low volume. I noticed my phone can adjust the volume and the receiver can control the volume only as much as the phone allows. Never thought about the surround sound messing up the sound. I will try that first.

I do have a big Rock Blocker bt reciever that works well with the Samsung phone. I might need to upgrade my phone, lol. Its a S-5 but works fine. I use it mostly to stream music.

iPad is fine with Airplay. The nice thing is since it’s over WiFi you don’t have BT range issues. As long as you’re on WiFi, you can stream and the bandwidth is much better than BT.

Bill, it is good that your Rock Blocker receiver works well with the Samsung phone. It suggests that the phone is probably not the culprit.
On surround sound, often times the back speakers are run off of a lower-power amplifier while the front speakers have the higher power amplifier section. Try turning down the volume of the rear speakers or turn them off entirely and see if there is any improvement. Also, I presume that you've checked if the BT adapter is plugged into the CD player input or tape input.
Good luck, Bill.
