So what do you do with remaining points. You have 183k points and your week you want is 155k (this is just an example) What do you do with the remaining points?

Depending on your vip level and how early you planned and booked you may be able to deposit into the follow year.
If you are not VIP and you either just booked or booked a while ago but just realized you aren't going to make any additional bookings this year your options are much more limited. If you have at least 3 months left in your use year you can donate the points to military families through Wyndham. You can book a short stay for friends and family or others and rent it out or you can deposit it into rci as late as the last day of your use year.

If you have wyndham points you deposit into your wyndham points through the portal. Your access to RCI weeks or points depends whether you have plus partners (bought some points retail or were grandfathered in) or not. If you only have resale points you can only use your wyndham points to book RCI weeks inventory.

One year we had about 20,000 left and we just turned them in for some movie/dinner passes. It wasn't a great deal, but we were out of time and needed to decide before we lost them.

I haven't figured out how to not waste 4500 points. We always seem to have some left.

Back in March when I deposited my 2019 points into 2020, I left 500 points in 2019 so that I can book one night in Midtown by borrowing 32,500 from 2020.

If I decide not to go or can't find what I want, it only costs me 500 points.

May next year I'll only leave 100 points in the current year.

Uhm - I'm not sure that's necessary for borrowing to work these days? My understanding is that you can borrow
*all* of the points required for a reservation from the following use year for any reservation made within the
Express Reservation window (3 months). For example, I just tested this by all-but-final-step booking a two
night stay in mid-September, and I have 0 points available in my current use year. I borrowed all of them.

Can anyone else confirm? Did the Great Hiccup in the rules change how this worked?

My interpretation of the first statement below from Wyndham Knowledge Base is that you have to have some points for the "additional" ones.
I own two biennial contracts, so the final statement tells me that perhaps I don't have to save any.

  • You may only borrow points, if you need additional points to complete a reservation.
  • You may only borrow CLUB WYNDHAM® Plus Points from the Use Year following the check-in date of the reservation.
  • If you cancel a reservation using borrowed points, in accordance with the cancellation policy, the points will be returned to the Use Year from which they were borrowed.
  • Biennial owners may borrow points to travel during the years you don’t receive an allotment of points.

Yes, you can borrow ALL the points needed once you run out of use-year points. I've done it before and after the "Great Hiccup" <--love that name.
