I have been following the story of a little boy with SMA. (Nephew of a friend.)

I hope the medication can reach Isaac and all those that will benefit from the treatment.

Remember that insurance will not pay for it if the patient has not gone through "Step Therapy". A doctor can appeal to get it covered, but even then, insurance will cover a maximum 80%.

How many patients can afford this Therapy? Even at paying over $425,000 for five (5) years or if your insurance plan pays 80% of the costs. The average family cannot afford this Therapy.

Question. Did the American tax dollars pay for any part of this medical research?

No, that is why it is so expensive. While other countries pay for the medicine, Americans pay for the medicine + research/development + advertising + profits. Americans wonder why insurance is getting expensive, it has nothing to do with politics, it has to do with healthcare getting way too expensive (aka Capitalism).

That is a pretty blanket statement. In our lab we received no government funding but most if not all projects were based or built upon research that was funded by the government. The Human Genome Project was a 2.7 billion dollar publicly funded project.
