Yes to both.

Hacking into someones cable has been going on for years. Anyone can do a Google search and learn how to do that.

If you're talking about VOIP, the routers and servers that steer and store the digitized calls are susceptible hacking. Really, hacking into routers and servers and the data packets they carry, is easier than the old, but ever popular wiretapping, which requires special equipment and more effort. Proficient hackers can eavesdrop on hundreds of calls without ever leaving home.

Fortunately, most doing this are more likely to focus on a business's Internet phone lines to gather information that can be used for better profit.

How about hacking into Direct, Verizon, Cox’s or Spectrum systems?

Any system can be hacked. Some take more effort and time however, none are completely secure. Each provider will offer tips as to how to try to prevent this.

A Spectrum customer had this happen not to long ago and was surprised to find in his contract these dreaded words, "Customer is responsible for any fraudulent or unauthorized use of the voice service that occurs through the subscriber's account regardless of who is responsible for such usage."

Not sure why you're concerned but, check the fine print in your contract, regardless of the provider. If you suspect something, get on top of it quick and let your provider know.

As a general rule, if it connects to the internet, a cellular network, a landline or even a satellite it can be hacked.

Anything that's run by a computer or microprocessor can be hacked. They all need an operating system to run and virtually all operating systems have security flaws that make them susceptible. Even a computer not connected to the internet can be hacked if someone that opens a USB/CD/disk that has a contaminated file. Several years ago United States had a large team develop a virus that was introduced to Iranian plutonium centrifuges and destroyed several of them before they knew what happened. I've been reading The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage, and Fear in the Cyber Age by David E. Sanger, a perfectly scary book.

Horrible act Pedro, everyone feels the pain when this happens and it's happening too often.
