As some of you might know, we have owned a 1700 Sq ft townhouse in Ko Olina since 2011 and the house was built in early 2000s. Recently quite a few things have broken down (refrigerator, washer...) and now it’s AC. My property manager has provided an estimate of replacing the unit at a cost of $6,700 (Rheem Brand) or $7,200 (Carrier Brand). Does this sound reasonable? If so, do you have a preference between these two? If not, do you have a AC vendor or contractor to recommend?

Check with Costco. They have contracted vendors who sell things like heating and air conditioning, countertops, flooring, and such. I'd bet you can get a great replacement system for a better price than you're being quoted.

Good luck!

Both are good units.
Make sure you file the extended warranty papers or they do to get you the 10 year parts warranty.
You will only have 5 years without it.
Sounds like a good price I'll assume it's both heating / cooling
Not a fan of those 3Rd party sales, get what you pay for!
Good luck!

I believe it’s just for cooling. Heating unit is separate.

To clarify my earlier post: Costco has contracted vendors who are the same companies, selling the same name brand equipment, just at a lower price because the referral is part of their arrangement with Costco. You may find the exact thing you've been quoted, from the same people, but at a better price. No sense paying more than needed for the exact same equipment, right? (It's kind of like Costco's Auto Buying Program - you get the same car, just from a specific dealer who has agreed to sell it for a lower price than you'd get if you walked in off the street.)

I agree you want to stay with good equipment, but if you can save some money on it, it's worth exploring, anyway. :)

Good luck!

Equipment is only as good as the installation. Don't know if it's the same companies or not. Continuing ongoing service from the company you might trust thats doing your work. Lots of variables in the costs depending on seer ratings / styles, you can get a huge difference in prices. Apples to apples , know what your getting either way.
Don't take the butter off the bread he might be trying to rent your timeshare.
A car comes hole you drive off.
Now I buy window A/c's from Costco
I'm an independent HVAC.
I see a lot of crappy installs, never ran into a Costco job yet,
That price can fly in Ohio, Hawaii yikes, it still sounds good to me.
Good luck!

I agree that it needs to be done right. In my town here in Washington state, the biggest HVAC company in town has been doing business for decades. They sell direct, and they also sell inside Costco. I got quotes from them at different times in both locations. The same equipment installed at my home was quoted with about a thousand dollars difference, with the Costco vendor quote being cheaper. Both quotes came on the same letterhead, and were signed by the same sales manager. I can’t see them doing a different installation for one over the other, since their reputation is on the line.

As I said initially, it can’t hurt to compare prices, right? Buyer beware after that. :)

Oahu has a limited number of installers and when you are looking a central air systems, there are not too many companies that do that. Most people have split air units or one in each room. So, you can get on the phone and call around to check prices to see how much it cost. The bad news is that everyone of them will be busy and it might be a couple months to get the work done. It is probably best to go with what your property manger recommends and get it done to keep your tenant happy.
