Lending Tree did a study of 236 metropolitan areas and counted the number of people, fully retired, 65 years or older, who moved into a metropolitan area versus the number of people fitting the above description who moved out. So their rating of retirement locations is not based upon a collection of subjective criteria, but what retires actually have actually done. (In essence, how have retirees voted with their feet.)

Not surprisingly, the states of Florida and Arizona accounted for eight of the top ten spots and fifteen of the top twenty-five. What will come as a surprise to many of you (not to me) is that the Milwaukee metropolitan area ranked number four. The only other location outside of Florida and Arizona to crack the top ten was Nashville which ranked number ten.

I can't remember where I read it recently, but the article said that as many people move to Florida, a lot also move out.

In NY we call them halfbacks. They go to Florida, don't like it and move half way back to the Carolinas.

We were surprised that Eugene Oregon and the greater Portland/Vancouver area were in the top 25. Oregon is not a tax friendly State. Though we do not get the heat of the South, the humidity of the East, or a lot of snow. So if you do not mind cloudy gray skies for 5 to 6 months of the year it is otherwise pretty nice.

Northern Washington has come on our radar as we continue to consider where we want to retire to when the day comes for reasons including the ones you note above.
One thing for sure I have come to discover in this search for 'the' place to retire to - there is no 'perfect' or even 'close to perfect' place. Trade offs will have to be made.
In all of the criteria we are considering, the tax implications are being moved down the list a bit.

Another aspect of the search (where to retire to) is how long it can last. And while that is a function of when one starts their search, the point here is this is a consideration that can be with you for a very long time. So much so that one questions (and requestions and requestions) many of the conclusions they come to throughout the process. I honestly can't think of any other decision in life that has such repercussions AND one spends such a long time thinking about, planning for, and revising.

I don't know if it is true today or not but a number of years ago many Californians were selling their houses for big bucks, moving to Oregon, buying a new house with a small part of the money and using the rest to support their retirement...

Portland has always been a retirement destination .... if you're young
