We have an extra night between TS's in Spain near Barcelona, and Montserrat looks like the winner. Has anyone overnighted at the hotel (Abat Cisneros) right up at the monastery, and if so, was it worth it? They also have apts up there, don't include their breakfast. We can get a nice spacious airb&b for less, slightly down the mt. Opinions? TIA!

We just got back from Spain yesterday! We spent several days in Barcelona, but just did a day trip to Montserrat. I’d stay right at the monastery if you can. Traffic on the mountain is pretty terrible and parking at a premium...we got there early in the morning and by noon it was so crowded I don’t think you would want to try and drive anywhere! Beautiful place though, I’m glad we went.

Thanks so much Deb, we'll do the hotel in that case. This will be over a weekend so no doubt extra crowded, hopefully we can find parking on the Friday we arrive. Maybe we shouldn't be in a rush to get there. The photos sure do look beautiful.

It really is beautiful. We took the funicular from near the monastery to the top of the mountain and got some great views looking both down at the monastery and across Spain! There are some walking trails up at the top as well...I’d recommend it if you have time! Have a great trip!

We day-tripped there from a TS in Cambrils. Beautiful place. As luck would have it, there was a strike on the funicular, but our intrepid bus driver hauled us up to the monastery. Only mistake we made was getting into the line for an 'audience' with the Black Madonna, and it took FOREVER for every pilgrim to have even a few seconds in front of the statue. We really wanted to hear a boy's choir but felt fortunate to be out before the bus left.
