That may be a true comparison but not a practical comparison as StarOptions and Bonvoy points are not the same currency.

Whereas the value of Bonvoy points may carry a somewhat homogenous value, the value of StarOptions is really dependent on the specific VOI and the maintenance fees associated with the specific VOI. When looking at alternatives to cash or Bonvoy points, one might be inclined to use StarOptions associated with a low MF VOI for use in a particular location where it would not make sense to use the same number of StarOptions associated with a high MF VOI.

IMO, the appropriateness of which currency to use is going to be a case-by-case basis taking into account the number of Bonvoy points required (placing a value on those points), the cash that would be required, and the value of StarOptions using $MF/StarOptions on specific VOIs.

Yup. I don’t think I have ever seen an option like this that made sense to me. It’s all oriented as a method for management to increase the number of points redeemed for less. We should never expect anything else.

I own in Maui, and I have never seen any exchange of StarOptions into other programs to be a worthwhile thing, whether cruises, hotel stays, or anything else. I would only do it as a last resort, if I couldn't use my StarOptions for some reason. I'd be way ahead renting out my units and using the cash to pay for any of these other things.

The JW Marriott in New Orleans between Mar. 18-June 29 can be reserved for 25,000 SOs per night. 148,100 SOs from WKV would allow a reservation for 5.9 nights. If I were to reserve between July 8-Sept. 12, then only 17,500 SOs per night are needed. That would allow for a reservation of 8.46 nights.

If I converted the 2 bd WKV Plat unit to BPs, I would get 216,000 BPs. That would allow for a reservation to 6.17 nights.

I agree with everyone that this isn't a good use of SOs, but I still wanted to actually run the numbers with a specific example.

I believe it is even worse. A conversion to BP's would only allow a reservation of 4.32 nights (OK 5 nights with one night free). JW Marriott New Orleans is now a Category 6 and requires 50,000 BP's per night. The 35,000 on the front page is an IT glitch. It's 50,000 when you work through the reservation.
