"Burger King is introducing a Whopper made with a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods.

Burger King’s chief marketing officer, Fernando Machado, said that in the company’s testing so far, customers and even employees had not been able to tell the difference between the old meaty Whopper and the new one.

Impossible Foods biggest innovation has come from its use of heme, an iron-rich protein that the company believes is responsible for much of the distinctive taste of meat. Impossible found a way to cultivate heme from the roots of soybean plants and mass-produce it using yeast. The heme is blended with a combination of other vegetarian ingredients that are intended to have the slightly nutty texture of ground beef.

I'll try it ... maybe a one and only time!)

A local pub is now serving the "impossible burger."
I said, "I'd prefer a _possible_ burger... one with real meat."

Interesting that they chose this date to release a meatless burger... :ponder:

Kurt's on the ball, I am thinking.

That sounds really strange. What is so bad about meat, anyway? The bad stuff is flour, sugar and potatoes, according to my diet that is working amazingly. I am doing Keto.

I didn't realize the date!

But I think it's real and if people cannot detect that's it's not real meat in a double blind test then perhaps the faux-meat science has advanced
but I reserve judgement until this carnivore has done the taste test

OK, so this time it's real. Not an April Fools trick. But I'm watching you.

I sort of wonder why so much 'vegetarian, or vegan' food is made to masquerade as meat, dairy, animal product rather than calling it what it is. Plant based vegetable food product. Like why call it Almond 'milk'? It isn't milk. I suppose one can call the veggie 'burger', a 'burger' because, well, there's no ham in hamburger. A patty is a patty, regardless of what it's made of. Standing in front of the freezer case yesterday, I saw Beef Burgers, Turkey Burgers, Chicken, Salmon, Veggie Protein (appetizing, huh? Burgers. No 'Impossible' Burgers, but if they take off and are tasty and profitable, they'll be there.

I have had Impossible Food's burger at The Counter,. It's really good and I couldn't tell the difference. The company is in the Bay Area and was founded by a well known Stanford Professor. It's quite expensive at The Counter, so my guess is it might be priced more than a regular whooper.

Canadian burger chain A&W has been selling a “beyond meat” burger since last summer, and it’s pretty close to beef in taste and texture. They’re so popular that A&W was struggling to keep them in stock.

It's being reported that this "whopper" will cost 1.00 more than the true whopper. Just another reason why this will never pass my lips.

In our area that would bring it to almost 6 bucks. Local restaurants have 5 and 6 dollar burger nights where you are served and it comes as a platter. We try to eat meatless 1 or 2 days a week so the idea is welcome but not the price. I won't even buy a whopper without a coupon. I like some of the meat substitutes. The only problem is the comparison. If you are expecting the meat they are replacing you will be disappointed. If you think of it as a new protein they are usually pretty good.
