I understand I need to use a Hawaiian escrow company (although the closing company can be on the mainland) to purchase a timeshare in Hawaii. Any good (and affordable) recommendations? Thanks!

I'm not sure how true that is. I've bought and sold a number of timeshares in Hawaii, without using a Hawaiian Escrow company, and never had an issue. I'd suggest you contact the folks at LT Transfers, who are Tug members and highly recommended, and ask them if they can help you out. http://www.lttransfers.com

Couple thoughts:

-The law requires you to use a Hawaiian Escrow Company, but not a Hawaiian Title Co.

-If there is little or no money involved, there is no need for escrow.

-While this law is on the books, it is basically unenforceable, because there is no mechanism in place to monitor compliance. In other words, the state of Hawaii has no idea if you use escrow, or which Co. you use, because their only interaction with your purchase is when the deed is filed with the County Recorders Office in Hawaii - usually using an automated system. The deed has no info about escrow at all.

YMMV

Just this past week, we used Ruth Silva at Hawaii Document Service in Kona, for a no-value (gift) deed transfer. Very pleasant, professional, quick and efficient. The cost was very reasonable, we also chose to pay for a title search (option). As a plus, she’s used to dealing with Wyndham. ;)
We liked dealing with her very much:

Along these lines, what are the options for a Hawaiian purchase that will require escrow, but not necessarily a title policy.

LT quit doing even a poor mans escrow of holding the check on Hawaiian closings, so they aren’t an option.

It doesn't have to be the same company. You could use LTT for the title transfer, and an escrow company for just escrow. You'd have to shop around and see what's the cheapest way to do it.
