Hawaii interisland carrier Mokulele acquired

“Commuter carrier Southern Airways has acquired Hawaii interisland airline Mokulele for an undisclosed price.

With the acquisition, Southern Airways will operate 1,380 weekly flights, up from the 600 it currently flies to 20 cities in the U.S. mid-Atlantic and South.

Southern and Mokulele fly nine-seat Cessna turboprops. Southern said it plans to maintain the Mokulele brand for marketing purposes, though the carriers will eventually be folded under one operating certificate.

Mokulele serves nine Hawaiian destinations and operates an Essential Air Service route between Los Angeles and border city El Centro, Calif.

Southern said the expanded company will try to obtain additional interline agreements with larger carriers. Southern has interline agreements with American and Condor Airlines while Mokulele interlines with Alaska and Air New Zealand.”

Since we bought our Molokai condo, I have flown Mokulele a few times and I like their service.

On my next trip in early May, I will be trying Makani Kai Airlines for the first time. They fly the same type of airplanes and are slightly cheaper than Mokulele. Then I will decide who I will give most of my business to. But really it looks like it will depend on the flight times during each trip. They are only nine seaters so flights fill up fast. So I think the one will the best flight times for each trip will win.

I did take Hawaiian’s Ohana flight to Molokai once. The planes are bigger, they hold around 50 people and are still prop planes but definitely larger. The only problem with them is if I get cheaper flights from the mainland that go anywhere but Oahu, I have to have a connecting flight over to Oahu. I do have one free flight with them that I have to use this year and it looks like we will use it over Labor Day week. It worked out well since there are great flight times and prices to Oahu during that time.

After Island Air went under and left me scrambling to find alternate interisland flights, I'm reluctant to book anything other than Hawaiian Airlines now.
