I am a weeks owner of 5 Marriott timeshares since 1998. I have used the weeks each year. They are all enrolled in the destination club and I pay the annual fee of what a presidential designee pays. Today I placed my Maui week into the destination club in order to reserve some days in the new Waikaloa property. For me to get 7 days I was 50 points short of owning enough points so I had to settle for fewer days and had 500 points left which was 50 points shy of adding another day. My question is how can I preserve the 500 points without losing them. This is the first time that I have ventured into using the destination club as a resource and feel like that my doubts about not buying points have been justified as it appears that I will lose the 500 points if not used in 2020 or if banked and not used in 2021. It doesn't seem like I can use them in conjunction with the Marriot reward points and I can only buy 65% of marriot reward points using the destination club points. Am I missing something? I don't think I will be converting anymore of my weeks to the destination club in the future as it seems that I will never actually come out even in the unlikely event that I might chose to do so. Any suggestions from someone that is knowledgeable in the usage of points. Thanks for any help.

You can use it for resort certificate for participating resorts. The conversion rate is poor but better than wasting the points altogether. It is 325 DC points for $110.

As Fasttr said, you can rent 2020 points on VPE (vacationpointexchange.com) to add to what you have and book something else - either just rent the 50 to book one night as Fasttr suggested, or rent a bunch to add to your 500 and book a whole new vacation. You can also bank them to 2021 and then rent 2021 points to add to your banked points for another trip of some kind. Or bank to 2021, elect points again in 2021 and book a trip. Wash, Rinse, Repeat. Lots of options. In 5 years of points ownership, we've never had to forfeit points. Always found a way to balance it out.

... and I can only buy 65% of marriot reward points using the destination club points. ...

Your 500 remaining DC Points from your enrolled Week cannot be exchanged for Marriott Rewards Points. From page 3 of the TUG DC Points FAQ:

(bolding mine) "...*Note a single Enrolled Week may be EITHER converted to Destination Club Points OR exchanged for the amount of Marriott Rewards Points that is stipulated in the MR Addendum to the Week's original purchase contract. Meaning, a single Week cannot be converted to DC Points with any/all of those DC Points subsequently exchanged for MRP. ..."

When I had left over points that I couldnt use I banked them into the following year and I felt compelled to convert more weeks to points to make use of them. If you plan on converting again this works great but can make the transition back and forth between usage options tedious. I think I’ll follow advise given and rent extra points next time.

Am I missing something?

Always review the Marriott Destination Points Chart online for your resort before booking,
which you apparently did, and get those additional points if necessary to make it happen.
You may not have known about it, but being 50 points short you could have rented those 50 points
and quickly had them already in your account, covering your whole desired stay.
They can be added to your account on the same day they are rented, literally within a few minutes.

For the current situation of leftover points, be creative and add a night or two if possible, or make another short stay
somewhere else, even if in off-season....it's not so bad. Or rent them out yourself.

Bottom line, you SHOULD NOT buy more points, but get them from another source.
For a small amount, doing a presentation somewhere you can get 250+ DC Points as a free gift just for attending.....
use that source!
