We currently own TSs that trade through II. We are looking to add to our portfolio and would like to add something that has good trade value through RCI (mid to high TPUs). Looking for some valuable insight from the people who knowing TS best. TUGGER thoughts on what would be a reasonable buy to add to our portfolio that will give us some good trades within RCI?

Just keep in mind just because a TS has mid to high TPU value today that is no guarantee it will tomorrow. I have seen many “great” traders go down significantly in TPU value

And isn’t that kind of counter to the old secret of tiger traders? Or is that outdated, from before TPU kicked in?

Jan, you want to look for a high demand location with fewer timeshares. It’s about supply and demand. One example is Waikiki. Independent timeshares there trade well in RCI, but the trade off is maintenance fees tend to be a bit higher there. Good luck in your search.

I think (but may be wrong) TPU are more likely to stay high (more or less) if the TS has intrinsic value. I also think it is a better idea to buy something you would be happy staying at yourself or that you could rent out for at least mf if either TPU did go down a lot or trading didn't work well for you for other reasons.

So I would probably not buy any TS that appears over-valued by RCI (unless it is somewhere you would enjoy going yourself) and choose a TS in a desirable location with high demand. For me, resorts in Southern California generally fall in that category for example. Lots of people enjoy travelling there and the supply of TS isn't huge. TPU for the most part seem to be pretty good and I think will stay so. However, most of the resorts there are not as fancy as in other places (e.g. Orlando) and/or both buy-in and mf tend to be on the higher side.

It depends on what you are looking for though. If you are only looking to trade and don't mind the risk of TPU possibly declining there are other options that are more cost-effective.

We definitely want to buy somewhere that we would want to go and we could use for several years. We're actually retired (69 and 58) and I'm not sure if we should even be adding anything to our portfolio. But, we only own 3 weeks (Marriott Kauai, Hyatt Sunset Harbor, and a Sheraton Desert Oasis 1BR off-season week) and we'd like to do a little more traveling and timeshare works well for us. If we put SDO into RCI then that would give us access to RCI but not alot of TPUs. So, still just researching and making decisions. Thank you everyone for your input!
