hello,

I’m interested in going to Mexico (possibly to the Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta) around May. What would be a good time of year to avoid Mexico:
because of the weather
school schedules
and real busy resorts times?

Thank you in advance!

We avoid May to October because of heat - average temperatures in the 90's to low 100's. Also Hurricane Season is June to November. Our preferred dates are January - March for the weather to get out of the gloomy rain of the Northwest. The average temperatures in Cabo are in the 70's to 80's during this time frame.

Mexican Holiday Weeks are : Christmas ,New Years and the week before and after Easter Sunday .
Many Mexican TS resorts do not sell these 4 weeks as part of standard RTU / float week contracts .

The Easter weeks make Puerto Vallarta and other drive locations from Mexico City ( 10+ hours )
and Guadalajara ( 5 hours ) very busy . We have been to PV twice during Easter vacation and enjoyed it
It was busy with families . ( ie : 2 grandparents in their late 50's with sons / daughters & spouses and 4 young grandchildren in a 2 bedroom ) Lots of kids playing Marco Polo in the pool.

Since you list home as Hudson Valley NY - you may wish to go when cold at home ( Jan - April )

rainfall ( & temp) varies by location :
In general the west coast gets very little rain Jan - April .
Cabo is dry to June but gets warmer past April

Cancun & Riviera Maya weather is more like south Florida . ( ie some precipitation every month )
but is likely to have the lowest cost flights from NY .

May in Nuevo Vallarta / Grand Mayan should be good weather .

If you want to go in May, I would suggest the first week before it gets too hot. It will not be busy then because school is still in session. It will not be as hot then as later in the month.

We did go in mid-June one year and it was not too bad. We were in Mazatlan for the month and booked a week at Grand Bliss in Nuevo Vallarta to use up an expiring deposit. We were happy to have a unit on the non-ocean side because we could sit in the shade in the afternoon and read. :) I was very comfortable in the shade but hot in the sun in the afternoon.

@T-Dot-Traveller is tight about the weeks before and after Easter Sunday at beach towns within driving distance of CDM and GDA. Conversely, this is a good time to visit CDM or GDA.

Basically city people leave their towns to go for a break because most kids have a school break.

We go to Cancun in May and the weather is usually great except for the last few days of the trip. It has poured for those days on three out of our four trips. We always went either the last week or last two weeks of May. This year we switched it up and went in the beginning of May and we had great weather all the way through.

May is a great month to visit Mexico. It is off season and before hurricanes. The weather is fine. It is always hot in Mexico but the weather on the Caribbean side of Mexico is exactly like Miami. I grew up in Miami so I know. On the Pacific side of Mexico, there are no hurricanes, so that is not a concern. You would be more concerned about river run off in Nuevo Vallarta, which starts in the rainy season. May would still be okay. In general, May is shoulder season in all of Mexico.

On the Pacific side, Puerto Vallarta is not immune with hurricane. We were at the resort in October 2015 and had to evacuate to the Vidanta office shelter. It was predicted hurricane category 5. Our flights were "delayed" 4 days later. Fortunately nobody was hurt, not even a fallen coconut tree at the resort.

Here is the hurricane path.

That is interesting. I did not know there are hurricanes on the Pacific side because we do not get hurricanes in California. We get storms but not hurricanes. I would imagine if the Pacific side of Mexico got hurricanes, California would get hurricanes too. Just like Florida gets hurricanes and the entire Atlantic coast gets them too when they turn north. Also, Mexico limits construction to 3 stories on the Caribbean side partly due to hurricanes but allows taller buildings in the Pacific side because supposedly hurricanes are not a concern. I guess I will need to do some research on hurricanes on the pacific side. This is news to me.

Fall 2014 - Odile hit Cabo area - & many resorts were damaged . Vidanta Grand Mayan was closed for many months & renovated .

The same year the rain from the remnants of Norbert broke 75 year old rainfall
records in Phoenix & flooded highways in early Sept. and the remnants of Simon passed near Tuscon in early October with intense rain & some flash flooding

When the water flowed south toward the Gulf of Cortez it flooded out some roads in the Rocky Point / Puerto Penasco Mx. area where we were vacationing in October .

We were told that the flooding was caused by "gringo water" - by " bomderos"
who were helping out .

Wow! I had no idea. It's odd that the hurricanes do not go up to California. We live in Northern California. We get our storms from Dec-Feb. So when is hurricane season on the Pacific coast of Mexico?

We were told way back when that hurricanes mostly affect the Bay of Banderas with storm surge. The Sheraton Buganvilias has a boulder marked from a hurricane in 2004 or 2005(?) that was deposited near the lobby.
