Hi, We have just checked in at Marriott Grand Chateau at Las Vegas. Just wonder if we give tip every time we get/park the car at the hotel and how much tip is appropriate? The hotel only has valet parking and it seems some people just handed in the key and no tip, so I was not sure.

I give a couple of bucks when the car is brought to me. Nothing on drop off.

I know I've heard that some people tip on drop off, but I never, ever (well, almost never) do that. It simply isn't necessary, unless somebody is keeping your car "special" for you, like holding it for a half hour instead of parking it, or in the case of a casino, parking it "up front" by the pickup, where they just hand you your key and there it is, rather than having to wait for it to be fetched.

As I said, I'll tip for holding if it is only going to be a short period. In that case I'd tip $10, although mostly tips are pooled.

I take a bunch of $2 bills with me when I go to Vegas. I tip the valet $2 at drop off and another $2 at pickup.

I tip at drop off and pick up. But then, I live in Vegas. We have a tipping culture.

As I mentioned above, I never tip in unless I want/need/expect special service. And the locals I know do the same.

But as far as the tipping culture, I always tip the wait person at a buffet, and if I am meeting visiting friends (and expect to be there a long time talking) then I tell the wait person we want to sit awhile and I give them about $20. I also tip the person who makes me a stir fry or an omelet $1.

I generally tip about $3. leaving, nothing arriving (except see above). I know tourists tip more, but I don't unless I get some sort of a special service...getting my car first out of turn, keeping it close in, etc.

If there is no offer/agreement of a special service, it just doesn't make sense to tip going in, at least not in Vegas.

A buck each way...not too cheap, not too extravagant.

A reason why although I like Vegas would not want to live there. Tipping more to get your car out first? I understand everyone is happy except the person having to wait longer for the car.

Well, there are reasons (which I'll not go into here) why you might *want* me to go first and get out of everybody's way.:eek::eek:

Besides, you've heard the phrase "Money talks and BS walks," right? There never was a place this is more true than Las Vegas.
