Pi Day 2015: Meet the Man Who Invented π - by Gareth Ffowc Roberts/ Science/ Mathematics/ The Guardian.com

"Anglesey-born William Jones was the first person to use the Greek letter π for the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. But who was this little-known figure?

In 1706, William Jones – a self-taught mathematician and one of Anglesey’s most famous sons – published his seminal work, Synopsis palmariorum matheseos, roughly translated as A summary of achievements in mathematics.

It is a work of great historical interest because it is where the symbol π appears for the first time in scientific literature to denote the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter..."

Pi Day Hits a Milestone That Comes Only Once a Century: 3/14/15 - by Alan Boyle/ Science/ nbcnews.com

"Pi Day was dreamed up 27 years ago to celebrate 3.14 on 3/14, but this year the geek dial is being turned up to 15 — as in 3/14/15. And this'll be the only year until 2115 that you can turn the dial up to the max, at 3/14/15, 9:26:53, an exact match for pi's first 10 digits.

As a matter of fact, there are two opportunities to celebrate the mysteries of 3.141592653 on Saturday..."

I teach PI day with my students each year. Happens to also be my birthday. I have the kids take yarn and measure the circumference and diameters and compare them. They discover despite the size of lids, it's always about 3 1/7 - or 3.14

We also take a cookie, cut it in thirds, put one frosting and 4 toppings. 3.14 treat!
